CPS EXPRESS! April 26, 2004 | |
The Re-Certification Clock is Ticking!
Please begin the process now. Any technician or instructor with an expiration date between June 1, 2003, and November 1, 2003, can still re-certify without penalty and without participating in an additional course, but the registration process must be completed by May 31, 2004. Beginning June 1, 2004, they will no longer qualify for re-certification.
Since the interim process for past-due re-certification has several steps that cannot be completed in a single sitting, we recommend that all affected individuals begin the process right away. Here is a summary of the required steps:
- Go to the online certification system.
- Click on Technicians or Instructors, as appropriate for the certification level you held immediately prior to your certification expiration.
- Log in with the User Name and Password you received in the mail. If you did not receive a User Name and Password, call 877-366-8154 for assistance.
- You may click on Update Profile to ensure that all of your contact information is current. If you have already done that, click on Log Seat Check Activity.
- Enter seat check activity for each of the five required seat check items, and enter the instructor who witnessed each item. If you are uncertain of the instructor’s certification number (it should be on the sign-off form), you may search for the instructor in that part of the system. Please note that only currently certified instructors will be available through the search function.
- Wait for the instructor(s) to verify online the successful completion of each item. This process could take up to two weeks, depending on instructor response, so please get started early.
- Once all seat check items are approved, register for re-certification. You may do this by visiting our site, clicking on Apply for Recertification and logging in. The system will guide you through the process. If you do not have access to a credit card, you may choose to download the CPS Certification Registration Application from the SAFE KIDS Web Site.
- You will receive an exam ID and password, along with a link to the exam, by e-mail. This may take up to five days, assuming the e-mail address in your profile is correct (see step 4).
- Begin the exam through the online system. You may complete the exam within one sitting, or you may log on and off multiple times if you wish. You must complete the exam within 10 days of the time you begin the exam.
- A preliminary score will be displayed upon exam completion. The exam will then be officially scored, and the data will be transferred to your certification profile within 20 business days. You will also be mailed official notification of your status within 20 business days.
Additional Instructor Re-Certification Requirement
Eligible instructors must have logged at least 16 lecturing and hands-on teaching hours prior to re-certifying. Re-certification requests for instructors will not be honored until a completed copy of the 2003 teaching log is faxed to CPS Certification at (202) 393-2072 and processed by SAFE KIDS.
Instructor’s Note: Process for Providing and Returning Student Materials
Several types of situations that affect this process have been brought to SAFE KIDS’ attention. Some instructors find that their maximum class size was too optimistic. They hope to minimize the expense of shipping back excess course materials. Other instructors have multiple courses scheduled and would like to help reduce costs by applying unused materials to future classes. A few courses have been canceled or postponed after materials have been shipped.
The current materials shipping system is set up to accommodate as many needs as possible and keep costs as low as possible. Case-by-case interventions to the system cost money. Changes can also prevent the system from operating as efficiently as possible.
In this initial phase of the online system, SAFE KIDS is monitoring materials shipping closely. It will be evaluated after approximately six months of use. Until then, we must require everyone to use the materials shipping system as it is set up, so that our evaluation will be valid and the resulting changes that we make will be the right ones.
