Certification Renewal Courses
This one-day course is available for technicians whose certifications have expired. They must be in the system and their certifications may have expired at any time since the national program began in 1998. It was designed for former technicians who have maintained their child passenger safety knowledge and their hands-on skills.
After successfully completing the course, the individual will be sent online testing information. To complete the renewal process, he or she must pass the online exam. If a technician does not pass the course, he or she may become certified again by retaking the original certification course. Technicians whose certifications have expired may take the Renewal course one time.
Currently certified technicians or instructors needing an instructor to sign off on their seat checks (required for re-certification) may consider auditing this course. These individuals must be sure to contact the Course Administrator for details and availability. Course materials will not be provided, and they do not register for the course.
The fee for this course is $70, which includes all course materials, the online exam and, upon passing, two years of certification. Should the technician require a retake, there is a $20 fee.
Retake Courses
This course is available for technician candidates who pass the hands-on skill testing, attend the checkup event and do not pass the written test. This will allow for better tracking and feedback to the instructor who proctors the retest. Once a student’s score is posted, they are eligible to registered for a Retake course by the lead instructor of their original certification course.
New In Your Online Profile
Action Items
Depending on the status of the individual logged in, a variety of options called Action Items appear at the bottom of your main page. They range from CHANGE PASSWORD to REGISTER FOR A COURSE. Some appear only when the user becomes eligible, such as REGISTER FOR INSTRUCTOR CANDIDACY.
Posted Information and Permission to Post
You can now decide what information you’d like to appear on the “Find a Technician/Instructor” search engines. For example, you may want your email and phone number to appear, but not your street address. In addition, you can approve or withdraw your permission to post status with the click of a button.
Changing Your Password
Using the online system, you can change your password to something you are likely to remember.

Cancelling a Course Registration, Substitution and Rescheduling May Now Be Done Online
Cancellation
Students who cancel their registration at least 10 days before the course starting date will receive a refund of the course registration fee, minus a $10 cancellation fee.
Students who cancel their registration nine or less days before the course starting date will receive a refund minus a $30 late cancellation fee.
If the cancellation is made on the first date of class, we are not able to refund any of the registration fee. Students are welcome to reschedule to a more convenient course with no penalty.
Substitution
Substitutions from the same agency or organization (one individual taking the place of another in a course) may be made using the online system.
The person who is registered for a course may submit a substitute student using the online system. The new student must register with Safe Kids and have a profile in the system. He or she must provide their SK ID to the person who is registered for the course to be added as a substitute
Rescheduling Registration
Students are able to reschedule and transfer to another course at any time up to and including the first day of class with no penalty.
Lead Instructor Special Notice
Your course roster must list all people in your classroom! We know the most difficult part of being a lead instructor is not organizing or offering the course...it's making sure your roster is up to date.
Like you, we want to include everyone possible and don't want to turn anyone away from an available seat. However, these unaccounted-for/non-listed students are crippling the system, not only making it difficult for you to complete all your responsibilities during and after the course, but also creating confusion and slowing down the scoring and issuing of certification for everyone in the system.
Late and walk-in registrations (including those completed online) can be accommodated only if there is space available. As of September 1, all registrations must be submitted by midnight of the first day of the course following normal registration procedures. It is not possible to register after this date.
If an unexpected student shows up for your course, he or she has the following options:
- Use the system to register and pay with a credit/debit/check card online.
- Register online and print the registration form. This must be faxed along with a P.O. to customer service at 212-367-4343.
NOTE: Payment by check or money order cannot be accommodated on the first day of the course. - If a student claims to have registered with Safe Kids, he or she MUST provide proof proof (e.g. fax confirmation page with registration and P.O., tracking information with registration form and copy of check).
If the student fails to properly by midnight on the first day of the course, he or she will not be eligible for certification.
August Transition
For the month of August as people familiarize themselves with the new system, we will make two major accommodations:
- Although it has always been the policy that applications must be complete with payment before the course starts, we have not enforced this consistently. During August, applications with payment will be processed until the final day of the course. Starting September 1, students who do not appear on the roster will not be allowed in any course unless they can provide proof that they have submitted a registration form with full payment.
- Because many people have already submitted applications for controlled courses, in August applications for controlled courses will be processed once they are received by Safe Kids, bypassing instructor approval. As of September 1, we will only process applications for people who have been approved by the lead instructor. Any old, generic applications received for controlled courses without lead instructor approval will be returned.
