Web Site Access Restricted During Transition

Much of the CPS Certification Web site will be down during the transition to a new program provider from Wednesday, July 27 to Monday, August 1.  These functions will be affected:

  • Technician/instructor search
  • Course setup
  • Course search and registration
  • Seat check log entry and verification
  • Re-certification registration

However, that this DOES NOT affect the online testing.  For those who receive testing information prior to the beginning of the transition on the 27th, you may still log in and take your test online during this period, using the information you receive by e-mail or postal mail.  No testing extensions will be granted due to the downtime for the rest of the system. Please plan accordingly.

All technicians whose certification expires on August 1, 2005 will be granted an extra two weeks.  Their certification expiration dates will automatically be adjusted to August 14, 2005 on August 1.

Additionally, the entire certification Web site will have a completely different look and feel beginning August 1.  We know it may take some time to get used to the new look, but we hope that the site will be easier to navigate.

Thank you for your patience as we prepare to launch a greatly enhanced and improved Web site.

We’re Getting an Extreme Makeover!

The CPS Certification Web site will have a whole new look on August 1, 2005!

In addition to a more intuitive format, the technician management section (which is where you go after you log in) will be completely revamped.

Please schedule some time to play around with the new site, exploring the new options like course registration, changing your password and logging seat checks for re-certification.

Certification Renewal Course

We remain on schedule!  Instructors and course administrators will be able to register renewal courses starting August 1, 2005.  To accommodate fiscal year and budget constraints that many of you face, for the month of August only we are shortening the time required between course registration and the first day of the course from eight to four weeks.  On September 1, we will return to the regular eight-week requirement.

See this edition’s FAQ for more information.

CPS Listserv

“The List” began in 1995 to promote communication among vehicle manufacturers, child restraint manufacturers and child passenger safety practitioners.  All involved are interested in sharing knowledge and information to keep children safe in vehicles. Many questions deal with “best practice” issues or a discussion of what is in the news.

Examples of recent post topics include new child restraint technology, pickup trucks and news articles.

Featured Frequently Asked Question

When Can We Offer the New Certification Renewal Course?

Because the course will be available starting on August 1 and we are allowing four weeks to process your request (send materials, etc.), the first day you can offer the renewal course will be September 1.  This would require you to register the course online on August 1.  If you want to offer a course on September 6, it must be registered between August 1 and 6, 2005.

The requirement for four weeks between registering the course and offering it allows us the absolute minimum time necessary to process your course materials and make sure they get to you in time.  After September 1, we will return to the eight-week course registration requirement.

CPS Nerd Answers

Q. Who is the KIDZ IN MOTION (KIM) national child passenger safety conference named after?

A.  Kimberly Hassell Bazoge was a Nassau County police officer who passed away suddenly in June 1999. At the time of her death, Kim was assigned to Nassau County's 8th Precinct and held the designation of "Command Level Trainer.”

In May 1999, Kim attended the first NHTSA Standardized CPS Technician Certification Course in New York, hosted by Suffolk County Safe Kids.  It is the hope of all who knew her that her mantra, “anything for the kids,” continues through education, legislation and advocacy.
