Special Edition - CPS Curriculum

Your Participation is Requested

YOUR HELP IS NEEDED as the National CPS Board is currently undertaking a user-friendly update of the NHTSA National Standardized Child Passenger Safety certification course.

The new revision will reflect the board’s and NHTSA's commitment to the education philosophy initially intended when the standardized course was developed. This revision and redirection back to an “education” based national program was mentioned at Lifesavers, but many of you may have been unable to attend the conference.  In our attempt to keep all interested technicians and instructors aware of the progress we are making, regular updates will be posted on the http://www.cpsboard.org/ Web site and distributed through the CPS Express!.  We encourage you to make frequent visits to the CPS Board Web site, where updated information and opportunities will soon be available.

As the board continues to work on the revision, there will be several opportunities for your input.  We welcome your voluntary participation.  The Curriculum Committee intends to make use of the many qualified and experienced currently certified Instructors and Technicians.  Carefully read upcoming issues of the CPS Express! to follow the progress and volunteer to help. One announcement will be made on the CPS Listserv in September directing interested advocates to read the CPS Express! to volunteer. After that, all information will be posted on the CPS Board web site at http://www.cpsboard.org/.  Upon completion of the curriculum revision, all reviewers and contributors will be thanked publicly for their help with the many revisions.

 Photographs Needed

Photographs Needed by October 31, 2005

If you have photos that clearly illustrate correct CR use, misuse or technical changes that could serve in a “need to know” or “nice to know” category in the revised powerpoint slides or appendix, please submit them for consideration as a paper print along with the submission application found at www.cpsboard.org.  Any incomplete applications will be returned.  Completed submissions can be resubmitted if they fall within the dates requested.

  1. Go to http://www.cpsboard.org/ to download a photo submission information form.
  2. Complete the photo submission form and send a color printout of your picture, along with the NHTSA waiver (if faces can be recognized) found on the Web site for each photo, your complete contact information and what the picture is intended to show.

PLEASE NOTE:  IF CHILDREN OR ADULTS ARE SEEN IN THE PHOTO AND ARE IDENTIFIABLE, YOU MUST ATTACH THE NHTSA WAIVER, SIGNED BY THE ADULT, GUARDIAN OR PARENT at the beginning of the process. The waiver will enable the photo to be used in the curriculum and be added to NHTSA’s new photo library for general future use.  The photo waiver and more detailed instructions can be downloaded at http://www.cpsboard.org/.
  3. Send just one photo per 8 1/2” by 11” page.
  4. If your photo is selected for use, the chapter leader who needs that photo will contact you for an electronic transfer of the original.
  5. You may also, at that time, submit a CD if you are unable to send the photo electronically.
 Activities

Hands-On Activities Needed by October 31, 2005

If you have an idea about a current hands-on activity that can be improved, or if you can think of a better way to use a hands-on activity to teach a concept, please submit your idea on the curriculum submission form found at http://www.cpsboard.org/Follow all directions for submission.

**PLEASE NOTE:  Based on significant comments collected over the past nine years from course attendees, the new, revised curriculum will have more frequent but shorter hands-on activities.  The suggested chapters for the complete revision are available at www.cpsboard.org. These may change somewhat after the November Board meeting.

 Teaching  Toolkit

Teaching Tools Needed by October 31, 2005

If you have developed a “teaching tool kit” for any one of the chapters or for the course as a whole and would like to share your idea with current and future instructors, please go to http://www.cpsboard.org/ and download the curriculum submission form found at the site. Follow all directions for submission.

Chapter Review - coming next year!

Curriculum Committee Needs Reviewers

The Curriculum Committee is comprised of board members who have volunteered to work in groups to review each slide, chapter text, appendix, hands-on activity, etc.  There are five groups within the Curriculum Committee.  Each group is responsible for three to four chapters (includes appendix, procedures, etc.). Each Chapter is represented by a Chapter Leader with a set number of chapter responsibilities.

The Chapter Leader will select a peer review panel to look at one chapter one time, once the initial revisions have been made.

The goal of the curriculum revision is to increase the education component in the curriculum, making it more user-friendly for technicians  once they have completed the course. The Chapter Leader also selects photos, hands-on activities and teaching tools for use in the chapter for which he or she is responsible.  Doing the curriculum revision this way makes it available for more peer-review in the field.

Instructors Needed

If you are a currently certified instructor with three or more years experience teaching the national curriculum and would like to review one chapter of the curriculum one time, we will ask you to complete a very brief application which will be found at the board Web site at the appropriate time. Peer reviewers will be provided with the overall agenda and a listing of all chapters.  You will have an opportunity to select your top three choices, understanding that you will receive only one if you are selected by the Chapter Leader.  There will be a quick turnaround time of two weeks.  We anticipate this process will take place several months down the road.

Please watch the CPS Express! or the board Web site at http://www.cpsboard.org/ to apply when the process opens.  We anticipate receiving reviews from up to 50 instructors. By allowing one person to review only one chapter, more people may participate in the process.

Technicians Needed

All currently certified technicians will also have an opportunity to peer-review the curriculum.  Peer technician reviewers will be provided with the overall agenda and a listing of all chapters.

We anticipate receiving reviews from up to 50 people. By allowing one person to review only one chapter, more people may participate in the process.

 Thank You

The Curriculum Committee of the National CPS Board sincerely thanks all of you who continue to provide the very best of teaching and mentoring to the existing and future technicians and instructors in your communities.

We want to thank all of you who will participate in this open process, both now and at the conclusion of this  project.  Your knowledge and experience will make this product one that reflects current technology, “need to know” information and available “nice to know” resources.
