Children's Product Recalls May 2016

Safe Kids is committed to keeping you informed about recalls of products that can put kids at risk. This recall report includes pacifiers, infant sleepers and rocky road ice cream. There are also major announcements in this report involving a Listeria outbreak relating to frozen vegetables, recalled Graco car seats and an expansion of the Takata airbag recall. May 27, 2016 NHTSA; Mayborn USA is recalling Tommee Tippee Sippee Spill-Proof Cups USA because of the risk of mold exposure when it remains wet or moist. The CPSC advises that mold ingestion poses a risk of gastrointestinal symptoms and infections in consumers with compromised immune systems. 3.1 million are in the U.S. marketplace and 227,000 in Canada. Mayborn USA has received 3,066 reports of mold in the removable, one-piece, opaque valve of the Sippee cups, including 68 reports of children experiencing diarrhea, vomiting, or other symptoms associated with drinking from a cup with mold in the valve.

May 13, 2016 NHTSA; Graco Children's Products Inc. (Graco) is recalling Graco TurboBooster booster seats manufactured between December 22, 2015, and April 5, 2016. The booster seats have been missing the instructions for safe booster seat installation. The information helps parents insure that the seats are securely belted to the vehicle at all times, even if the seat is unoccupied. If you own a Graco booster seat it is important for you to determine if it was recalled and is installed correctly. Parents can consult a child passenger safety technician to make sure your child's car seat is installed correctly. May 4, 2016 NHTSA; Takata is voluntarily expanding and accelerating its recall of air bag inflators because of a defect which causes the air bags to unexpectedly inflate and fire shrapnel onto the vehicle's occupants. This is an expansion of a May 2015 recall, which involved 28.8 million air bags. Owners are strongly encouraged to determine whether their car is involved and have the airbag replaced. In a two-step process, you can find out if your vehicle is affected by using NHTSA's Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) search tool. As this is a new recall, all information might not be readily available in the VIN locater. If it is not online as yet, try again in the coming week. NHTSA continues to work with manufacturers to identify vehicles included in the recall. For more information visit NHTSA's website regarding the recall. Units: 35-40 million.

May 31, 2016 CPSC; Broane-Nutone is recalling L500 series ventilation fans designed to circulate air in and out of a home or building. The fan motor can overheat causing a fire hazard. Units: 450 in U.S. and 200 in Canada.

May 31, 2016 CPSC; CPSC: Mirka is recalling electric random orbital sanders because they can short circuit and cause a fire hazard. Units: 2,500 and 300 in Canada.

May 26, 2016 CPSC; Box Components is recalling BMX Bicycle Forks because the steer tube can become loose and pose a fall hazard. Units: 4,100.

May 26, 2016 CPSC; Rheem is recalling its Performance Platinum water heaters because the control panel on the water heaters can overheat, posing fire and burn hazards. Sold Exclusively at Home Depot. Units: 54,000.

May 26, 2016 CPSC; Osprey is recalling its Poco AG, Poco AG Plus and Poco AG Premium child backpack carriers because a cut in the plastic buckle on the shoulder strap can cause the shoulder strap to release, posing a fall hazard to a child in the carrier. Units: 31,000.

May 26, 2016 CPSC; Hollander Sleep Products is recalling Wamsutta mattress pads because of a violation of the federal flammability standard. Sold exclusively at Bed Bath & Beyond. Units: About 4,700.

May 25, 2016 CPSC; TJX is recalling foldable lounge chairs because they can collapse unexpectedly posing a fall hazard. Sold at T.J. Maxx and Marshalls Stores. Units: 5,200.

May 25, 2016 CPSC; Noble House is recalling counter stools because their sharp edge can cause a laceration hazard. Units: 2,000.

May 24, 2016 CPSC; Water Heating Technologies is recalling gas water heaters because a gap between the burner flange and the combustion chamber allows flammable liquids or gases to contact burning flammable vapors, posing a risk of fire or explosion. Units: 14,400.

May 24, 2016 CPSC; Philips Lighting is recalling its Metal Halide Lamps because the outer bulbs can shatter, resulting in hot internal pieces of glass falling from the lamps, posing a burn and laceration hazard. Units: 14,400.

May 24, 2016 CPSC; Rixson is recalling exterior gate closers, made by Assa Abloy Italia because the closer mechanism can break, and subsequently eject metal pieces including the spring or, alternatively, it can spray oil, posing a risk of injury. Units: 130.

May 20, 2016 CPSC; "phil&teds" is recalling its Dash v5 Strollers because the hinge used to fold the dash stroller can become damaged while opening and closing the stroller, posing a pinch hazard to the consumer. Units: 630 (also units in Canada).

May 19, 2016 CPSC; Black Diamond is recalling its Climbing Ascenders because the hardware holding the toothed cam can release, allowing the Ascender to slide on the rope or become detached from the rope, posing a serious risk of injury from a fall. Units: 2,800 (also units in Canada).

May 19, 2016 CPSC; Rocky Mountain is recalling bicycle models with front disc brakes to replace quick release lever. Presently, the front wheel hub can come into contact with the front disc brake assembly, causing the front wheel to come to a sudden stop or separate from the bicycle, posing a risk of a fall injury. Units: 17,300 (61,000 in Canada).

May 19, 2016 CPSC; SCOTT is recalling bicycles with SYNCROS seat belts because seat post can break, posing a fall hazard to the rider. Units: 1,400 (also in Canada).

May 19, 2016 CPSC; Digital Clamp Meters is recalling Klein Tools meters because it can fail to give an accurate voltage reading, resulting in the operator falsely believing the electrical power is off, posing shock, electrocution and burn hazards. Units: 114,000 (3,300 in Canada; 3,750 in Mexico).

May 19, 2016 CPSC; Black Diamond is recalling its Camming Climbing Devices because they can come apart during use, posing a fall hazard. Units: 45,500 (also in Canada).

May 19, 2016 CPSC; Black Diamond is recalling Via Ferrata Climbing Equipment because it is sold without the orange safety stitching on the lanyards, which increases the likelihood for the ends to unexpectedly detach, posing a serious risk of injury to climbers from a fall. Units: 100.

May 12, 2016 CPSC; Kubota is voluntarily recalling its utility vehicles because the steering shaft can break and cause the operator to lose control of the vehicle, posing a risk of collision. Units: Approximately 23,400.

May 12, 2016 CPSC; Hobby Lobby is voluntarily recalling its infant rattles because the seams of the rattle can separate, exposing the fiber stuffing and bell rattle, which kids can swallow, posing a choking hazard. Units: Approximately 14,400.

May 12, 2016 CPSC; Hobby Lobby is voluntarily recalling its infant pacifier holders because parts of the pacifier can detach, which kids can swallow, posing a choking hazard. Units: Approximately 12,900.

May 11, 2016 CPSC; Twin Go is voluntarily recalling its baby carriers because the waist buckle can break, posing a fall hazard to children. Units: Approximately 4,160 in the U.S. and Canada.

May 10, 2016 CPSC; Cybex International is voluntarily recalling its Decline free weight benches because the frame on the bench can collapse forward onto the user, posing an impact injury hazard. Units: Approximately 400.

May 10, 2016 CPSC; Bednest is voluntarily recalling its Bedside infant sleepers because the sleepers fail to meet mandatory federal requirements for these products, posing a fall hazard to infants. Units: Approximately 500.

May 10, 2016 CPSC; American Honda is voluntarily recalling its recreational off-highway vehicles because the front door can open unexpectedly while the vehicle is in use, posing a crash and fall hazard. Units: Approximately 3,300.

May 5, 2016 CPSC; BRP is voluntarily recalling its Can-Am Commander side-by-side off-road vehicles because of a problem with the steering coupling that can result in a loss of steering control and cause a crash. Units: Approximately 10,600.

May 5, 2016 CPSC; Munchkin is voluntarily recalling its LatchTM lightweight pacifiers and clips because the clip cover can detach from the pacifier, posing a choking hazard to young children. Units: Approximately 180,000.

May 3, 2016 CPSC; Walmart is voluntarily recalling its Rival electric water kettles because the heating element can fail and rupture, posing burn and shock hazards to the user. Units: Approximately 1.2 million.
