Safe Kids Worldwide has joined with the Ratna Nidhi Charitable Trust to launch the Safe Kids Foundation in Mumbai. The foundation is dedicated to the prevention of unintentional injuries such as road traffic injuries, falls, burns, drowning and poisoning to children ages 14 and younger.
The Walk This Way program (pedestrian safety) is the first program of the Safe Kids Foundation to begin injury prevention activities for children in India.
The kick off for the Safe Kids Walk This Way program will be held in Mumbai on Oct. 3.
According to the World Health Organization, four of the top 10 leading causes of death for children in India ages 5 to 14 are unintentional injuries. Road traffic injuries, drowning, fires and poisoning result in nearly 80,000 accidental deaths a year to children of this age group.
The partnership between the two organizations began when Mahendra Mehta, the founder of the Ratna Nidhi Charitable Trust and Martin Eichelberger, M.D., the chairman and founder of Safe Kids Worldwide both received major Awards in 2003 from the World of Children.
Dr. Eichelberger won the prestigious Cardinal Health Children’s Care Award and Mahendra Mehta was the equally prestigious Chairmen’s Award. Both men have a long history of charitable work benefiting children.
Safe Kids Worldwide agrees that this new partnership through the Safe Kids Foundation can help make injury prevention a priority for the families of Mumbai and ultimately throughout India.
FedEx has sponsored Safe Kids Walk This Way, Safe Kids Worldwide’s pedestrian program since 1999.
The Walk This Way program operates in 7 countries and is the first program of the Safe Kids Foundation to begin injury prevention activities for children in India.
