National Safe Kids Week Declaration

In 2005, Her Excellency Gloria Macapagal Arroyo declared the third week of June as "National Safe Kids Week." The week will be dedicated to helping prevent accidental injuries and death to children in the Philippines where accidental injuries kill more than 3,600 children each year. In observance of Safe Kids Week, Safe Kids Philippines and sponsor FedEx Express, in cooperation with the Philippine College of Surgeons, are conducting activities in Pasay , Paranaque and Olongapo City . FedEx Express and PCS volunteers conducted classroom discussions on pedestrian safety, painted cross walks and led walkability checks in selected Pasay and Paranaque City public schools.

Safe Kids Walk This Way

Safe Kids Week 2004 culminated on June 24 with the launch of the Walk This Way program in 25 public schools in Olongapo City . An estimated 18.9 million children walk to school each day in the Philippines , where 61 percent of road traffic deaths involve child pedestrians. Road traffic injury is the fifth leading cause of death among children ages 14 and under, and r ecent data from Safe Kids shows that more than 35,000 Filipino children will die or get injured in road accidents this year. Walk this Way, a global joint project of FedEx and Safe Kids, brings together parents, teachers, employee volunteers and safety advocates to teach students safe pedestrian behavior, encourage motorist awareness of child pedestrian safety and provide long-term environmental improvements to make neighborhoods and school zones safe for pedestrians. FedEx has sponsored the Safe Kids Philippines pedestrian safety program for the past two years.
