When one of my friends has a sick child, I always urge her to carefully read the instructions on the medication packaging.  Now that the Food and Drug Administration has announced that a wider variety of concentrations of liquid acetaminophen is available, this is even more critical.  As a parent or caregiver, you need to make sure that you are not giving your child too much or too little to best treat an illness and avoid side effects.

It’s good news that a less concentrated form of liquid acetaminophen is now available for infants – 160 mg /5 mL.  However, many concentrations are still in circulation.  That’s why it is so important for you to adhere closely to instructions for the correct dosage and the directions for use.  Note that the word “new” is on both existing and new packaging of liquid acetaminophen, so don’t depend on product banners to make your purchasing and dosing decisions.  Using the dosing device provided with the medication -- a dropper or a syringe – will help you make sure you give the correct amount.  Talk with your child’s health care provider about any questions related to medication safety practices.
