So why has Safe Kids entered the youth sports ring? Because we believe in the power of prevention and we also know too many kids are needlessly getting injured or falling ill while playing sports. Here are the facts: injuries in youth sports are occurring at an alarming rate; according to the National Institutes of Health, 38 million children participate in organized sports in the U.S. and about 1-in-10 receives medical treatment for a sports-related injury every year. We know that many of these incidents can lead to serious short and long-term health consequences. Most importantly, experts say as many as half the injuries sustained by youth while playing sports are likely preventable. So what are we doing about it? At Safe Kids USA, our mission is to prevent injuries to kids that occur at home, at play, and on the way. One of my main jobs at Safe Kids is to have the at play arena covered. What that means is supporting efforts across the country where Safe Kids coalitions and their teams hold free sports safety clinics for moms, dads and coaches. These clinics offer an opportunity to receive training and guidance on need-to-know information and practical tools that will reduce sports-related injuries, emergencies and illnesses. We’ve partnered with certified athletic trainers and sports medicine specialists to answer tough questions about proper hydration, overuse injuries, pre warm-up exercises, and how to spot a concussion. If you'd like the same opportunity to learn more about these type of youth sports safety topics--you can participate in our online sports safety clinic, hosted by Safe Kids USA and sponsor, Johnson & Johnson. The webinar, Preventing Youth Sports Injury: What Every Parent, Child and Coach Needs to Know, will be held on Wednesday, October 27th at 7:00 p.m. (EST). Register Today! During the webinar session, you’ll hear from an orthopedic surgeon who regularly treats young athletes, a certified athletic trainer, who is a national speaker and specialist on proper hydration in sports, and lastly, a pediatrician and sports mom who has both the medical and experiential knowledge regarding keeping your young athletes safe on the field--and emotionally healthy and balanced off the field. We hope you can join us for this informative and engaging seminar! So while you may know us as the child passenger safety experts, or the guys who care about checking smoke alarms every year--you can now check us out in the sports arena too and how we're working to keeping kids injury free on the playing field. It's all a part of our efforts in keeping kids safe—at home, at play, and on the way. By Lindsay Hansen |

Here at Safe Kids, we inspect your child's car seat, we check your home's smoke alarms, and we remind you to always keep your eyes on your child around water, and now, we're showing you how to keep your kids active, healthy and injury free while playing the sports they love.
