Now that fall is here and winter is approaching, fire safety is a “hot” topic. October is Fire Prevention Month here at Safe Kids and last week communities across the country held events for National Fire Prevention Week.  The President of the United States even issued a presidential proclamation proclaiming October 9 -15th, Fire Prevention Week.

Fire safety is something that many people may not think about until after they have been affected by a tragedy.  Each year more than 400 children die from fires in their homes.  Please let this month be a reminder to take important steps to protect your family from a fire.

One of the most important things you can do for your family and home is to make sure your home has a working smoke alarm. Working smoke alarms are an essential piece of safety equipment which should be in every home. If your family lives in a home with working smoke alarms, the likelihood of dying in a fire is half that compared to a home without working alarms.

Fire safety is not just an issue during the fall and winter months. There are important things you can do year-round to keep your family safe from fire.  Here are a few important steps to remember:

  • Put a smoke alarm on every level of your home, outside each sleeping area, and in every bedroom.
  • Plan and practice several escape routes and a safe place to meet outside.
  • Teach safety. A child who is coached properly ahead of time may have a better chance of surviving a fire.
  • Check the kitchen for preventable hazards and supervise children at all times in the kitchen.
  • Eliminate other potential fire hazards in your home.
