Blog: Greetings from Wellington, New ZealandPosted by: Kate Carr at Sep 28, 2012 12:00 AM CDT Keywords: Parents | Send This | Article Link | Comments(1) Greetings from New Zealand! After an 18-hour, 8,000 mile plane ride, I’m thrilled to have landed safely in Wellington, New Zealand with several other members of the Safe Kids team. We started our visit by spending a day with Safe Kids New Zealand and received a traditional Maori greeting – a very special blessing for guests and delivered by their leading elder. The greeting is used among Māori people and on major ceremonies and serves a similar purpose to a formal handshake in modern western culture.
We’re here for a couple of exciting reasons. First, we’re meeting with 19 of our member countries at our inaugural Safe Kids Worldwide Global Summit. It’s a great opportunity to meet our colleagues from around the world, discuss the great potential of the Safe Kids network, and hold skills-building sessions. We’ll also introduce the team to our newest member country – Serbia. Following the Safe Kids Global Summit, we’ve been invited to attend the Safety 2012 World Conference, which is the 11th World Conference on Injury Prevention and Safety Promotion. Leading experts, including many from Safe Kids Worldwide, will gather to discuss, debate and share experiences on injury prevention. What a great opportunity to learn from what’s working in the field. I’m honored to report that Safe Kids will be heading four presentations during this event and 13 posters will be presented by our Safe Kids network. I wish you could all be here with me in beautiful Wellington but since that might be difficult, please follow us on Twitter @safekidsworld and @safekidsusa. You can also learn more about the Safe Kids Worldwide by visiting our website. |
