As millions of east coast residents are preparing for what could be a catastrophic storm - Hurricane Sandy - we want to share some tips and links for you and your family to stay as safe as possible.
- Being prepared. One of the best things you can do is be prepared. The American Red Cross suggests three main tips: build a safety kit, make a plan and stay informed. Check out the video for more details on each of these steps.
- Using a portable generator. While these can be very useful during a storm and for temporary use, they can also cause danger. Check out tips from the United States Fire Administration for information on how to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning, electrical hazards and fire hazards.
- Avoiding Fires. Never use a grill inside, and make sure to use flashlights instead of candles.
- Tracking the storm. The Red Cross has some very useful information including a Hurricane app to track and monitor the storm. You can also use this app to find a shelter.
- Finding shelter. The storm could affect as many as 60 million people and hundreds are already taking advantage of Red Cross shelters across the Mid-Atlantic. Find out the location of the closest one in your area.
We encourage you to stay informed, evacuate if told to do so and stay safe!
