Blog: Is It Time to Replace Your Kid’s Football Helmet?

With all of the attention in the news on concussions in sports, the Consumer Product Safety Commission, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Football League have partnered with a group of sports entities and equipment manufacturers to create a football safety and helmet replacement program for youth in underserved communities in several key markets.

The initiative will allow helmets that are 10 years old to be replaced with new ones at no cost to the beneficiary leagues. It will also provide coaches with the latest educational information to help keep their young athletes safer and healthier. Read full announcement. Senator Tom Udall, a champion for safer football helmets, issued a statement lauding the new effort.

This sounds like a great program and one that I am all for. My 7 year old is playing tackle football for the first time this fall and I am concerned about the used helmets that the league currently provides. I started researching helmets and found a great article that explains everything about a football helmet if your interested in learning more.
