Our hearts go out to the millions of families who were affected by Hurricane Sandy. We are so grateful to emergency personnel who are working around the clock to make things better.

If there is one thing this “storm of the century” has taught us, it’s the importance of planning ahead and being safe.

Here are a few things that can help in the aftermath of the storm.

  • Candles can be cozy but keep them at least 12 inches away from anything that can burn. Remember to blow them out when you leave the room. Flashlights also make a great and safe alternative.
  • Double check to make sure smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors are working on every level of your home.
  • While loss of power can be a significant inconvenience, do not use a grill, generator or camping stove inside your home, garage or near a window. Remember, burning charcoal can produce lethal levels of carbon monoxide.
  • Halloween is one of the most anticipated nights of the year for kids, and adults, too. But if you’re in an area where fallen trees, flooding streets and loose electrical wires threaten to make it difficult or even slightly dangerous to trick-or-treat, please don’t hesitate to do the smart thing and stay inside this Halloween. There are lots of creative ideas that can still make it fun.

Stay Safe.
