Safe Kids Blog: Today is National “No Phone Zone Day”Posted by: Lorrie Walker at Apr 30, 2010 12:00 AM CDT Keywords: Parents | Send This | Article Link | Comments(1)
As a longtime advocate for safety, I know all too well the dangers on our nation’s roads. Today is National “No Phone Zone Day” and activities are being held all across the country to bring attention to the dangerous practice of distracted driving – talking on the phone and texting while driving. Thirty states are participating in the No Phone Zone activity highlighted by Oprah Winfrey and other national media outlets to make drivers aware of just how dangerous it is to drive while texting and using a phone. Motor vehicle safety for children is a passion of mine, and I want to remind parents and caregivers to place their cell phone or text messaging device in the back seat. This will ensure that the back door must be opened to retrieve the device and also serves a reminder to not overlook a quiet or sleeping child. If you are a mom or dad looking for tools to help communicate the hazards of distracted driving, I encourage you to visit the U.S. Department of Transportation’s www.distraction.gov, a new online resource of tools and materials. You can sign a driving contract with your teen so your child understands the responsibilities associated with their driver’s license. I also urge drivers to put their cell phones/PDAs away while driving by signing this pledge and joining millions of Americans in combating this hazardous behavior. Lorrie Walker |
