Massachusetts Enacts Novelty Lighter Law

Today, Governor Deval Patrick (D-MA) signed into law legislation prohibiting the manufacture and sale of novelty lighters in Massachusetts. Massachusetts is the 14th state to enact a novelty lighter law and the 13th state to wholly prohibit the sale of novelty lighters.

Children playing with matches and lighters cause thousands of injuries and hundreds of deaths each year.
Parents know the importance of keeping matches and lighters away from children, but when lighters look like toys, parents may not even realize their children are playing with fire.
