News You Can Use January 2012
|
Dear Supporter:
Many of us are enjoying brisk winter temperatures - or reminding ourselves that spring will be here before we know it.
If you have a young skater, skier, hockey-player or snowboarder, this month we offer you lots of tips to keep them safe. And since so many childhood injuries occur in the home, I hope you'll take advantage of our childproofing tips and other new resources for home safety.
No matter the weather, we bring good news from Safe Kids coalitions across the U.S. and our member countries around the world.
Thank you for your commitment to Safe Kids throughout the year.
Kate Carr President and CEO Safe Kids Worldwide

Your Home Can Be Full of Hazards
Thankfully, young children are curious, but this also means they are at greater risk for injury because they don't understand dangers like adults do -- even at home. Every year, more than 3 million children -- more than 8,000 per day -- are taken to the emergency room because of injuries that happened at home. Sadly, each day approximately six children die from injuries in the home. Learn how to childproof your home.

New Resources to Keep Kids Safe on Wheels and In the Home
We are happy to announce that with the generous support of the MetLife Foundation, we have created five new resources for both parents and kids. Materials designed specifically for parents include: a bike and wheeled sports safety brochure that will help you ensure your children are wearing their helmets properly and a comprehensive home safety guide which will help you keep your children safe from falls, poisonings, fire and much more. We also have a home safety tip sheet that gives you 10 practical tips for making your home safer.
Kids will enjoy two activity books about wheeled sports safety and home safety that will reinforce important safety messages. All of these materials can be found on our website in both English and Spanish.

Help Pass a Booster Seat Law in Florida
We support the efforts of the Florida Booster Seat Coalition as the Florida legislature convenes this week for the 2012 session. Florida remains one of three states that do not have a booster seat law. If you are a Florida resident, please ask your representatives to allow the House to vote on the booster seat bill, Seat Bill 151, Child Safety Devices in Motor Vehicles. |
