Safe Kids Week

National Safe Kids Week is an annual nationwide event introduced by Safe Kids Worldwide and founding sponsor Johnson & Johnson in 1988. A multifaceted public education campaign is created each year to help parents and caregivers understand a different part of childhood injury prevention. All the aspects of National Safe Kids Week reflect the theme. Most Safe Kids Week initiatives include:

Public Education and Coalition Activities

During Safe Kids Week, coalitions and chapters hold parent education workshops, school safety fairs and other events. We encourage families to get involved in local events by including games for children, curricula for teachers, educational materials for parents and much more, tailored to each year’s theme.

Research

In honor of Safe Kids Week, we publish research revealing something new about injury prevention that will help raise awareness around the year’s theme. From examining the benefits of role-modeling good behavior to a 20-year trend report on unintentional injury in the United States, Safe Kids Week research has expanded the body of knowledge and established best practices when it comes to injury prevention.

Media Outreach

We craft a robust national and local media strategy each year to help spread the word about child injury prevention topics. Safe Kids safety experts appear on television, radio, magazines and newspapers throughout the country to help educate families and raise awareness about important safety topics such as swimming safety and child development milestones.

Retail Promotions and Advertising Partnerships

Thanks to the media partnerships brought to us by Johnson and Johnson, targeted Safe Kids television ads start during Safe Kids Week and run through the summer. Past partners have included MSNBC, Nickelodeon, CNN, TNT, TBS and the Cartoon Network. Johnson & Johnson also distributes our safety messages with their coupons in Sunday newspapers to millions of homes across the United States during National Safe Kids Week.

Legislative Advocacy

Most Safe Kids Week activities have a legislative component, where we work toward strengthening child safety laws. One of the most recent successes is the Virginia Graeme Baker Act, a landmark new law to help protect children from drowning that was enacted in December 2007.

The law provides incentives for states to adopt comprehensive pool safety laws that will protect children from injuries and deaths from dangerous pool and spa drains and traditional drowning. The law also requires all public pools and spas in the country to be outfitted with anti-entrapment safety devices.
