Pedestrian Task Forces

An important component of the Safe Kids Walk This Way program is making walking safer for children. Each year coalitions around the country have created local task forces with the goal of improving pedestrian conditions for children by making long-term environmental improvements.

In 2010, Safe Kids Worldwide updated the Environmental Task Force Initiative and partnered with the University of North Carolina Highway Safety Research Center to provide expert trainers to conduct a two-day pedestrian safety workshop in the local communities of the grantees in order to prepare them to administer their newly awarded grants. 

Examples of environmental improvements coalitions are completing include:

  • Adding a curb to a school entrance
  • Installing pedestrian safety lights and countdown timers
  • Adding crossing signs
  • Installing high-visibility crosswalks and flashing lights
  • Adding solar-powered flashing school zone and speed limit signs
  • Replacing and retrofitting signal heads
  • Installing speedboards and flexiposts
