Public Policy
Laws and regulations often cause families to change their behavior and increase awareness of child safety. For example, in 2001, only two U.S. states had a booster seat law to protect older child passengers; in 2010, 47 states and the District of Columbia have booster seat laws. As a result, more children are better protected in vehicles. Safe Kids USA coalitions are grassroots advocates for child safety before their state governments. Together with related organizations, they push for key injury prevention policies. At the national level, Safe Kids USA may support or oppose pending legislation or rule-making, provide testimony at legislative hearings, or comment on how a bill or rule could be improved to better protect children. Safe Kids USA works hard to ensure that state and U.S. federal laws or regulations help prevent child injury. Safety laws and regulations can make products safer for consumers and promote the use of safety devices.
