Safe Kids is committed to keeping you informed about recalls of kids’ oriented products that are defective.  While it is important to keep aware of all recalls, Safe Kids urges you to pay particular attention to ones in red, as they are associated with one or more deaths. (There are no new deaths in this report.) We also include important news about products and consumer concerns:

EARLY NOVEMBER RECALLS

FDA 11/8/2012 - Nestlé USA is voluntarily recalling their NESQUIK® Chocolate Powder due to a salmonella risk.

NHTSA 11/06/2012 - Britax is voluntarily recalling several car seat models because of a potential choking hazard associated with the HUGS chest pads.

OCTOBER RECALLS

CPSC 10/31/2012 - Imagine Nation Books is voluntarily recalling its Double Dazzler Light Show toy because of a burn hazard when the batteries overheat.

CPSC 10/25/2012 - FLO Cycling is voluntarily recalling rim tape for bike tires, which can fail and break under pressure, because of a fall hazard.

FDA 10/26/2012 - Schoep's Ice Cream Company is voluntarily alerting customers that because of a packaging error, Kays Classic Vanilla Bean Ice Cream contains an undeclared allergen.

FDA 10/25/2012 - Tropical Valley Foods is voluntarily alerting customers that because of a label error, Dark Chocolate, Organic Dark Chocolate and Trail Mix items which were sold in bulk quantities contain undeclared allergens. 

CPSC 10/24/2012 - Rivers Edge Hunters is voluntarily recalling tree stands (for bow and rifle hunting) because of a fall hazard--the snap hook assemblies can fail, causing the stand and the user to fall to the ground. 

CPSC 10/23/2012 - Summit Treestands is voluntarily recalling Hunters’ tree stands. The hanging strap assembly can disengage and fail to hold properly on a tree, posing a fall hazard.

CPSC 10/23/2012 - Dorel Juvenile Group is voluntarily recalling Eddie Bauer rocking wood bassinets because of an infant suffocation hazard. The bottom locking mechanism can fail to lock properly if a spring is not installed, allowing the bassinet to tip to one side and cause infants to roll to the side of the bassinet. Dorel received 17 reports of incidents involving infants younger than three months old.

CPSC 10/23/2012 - ValcoBaby is voluntarily recalling its “Joey” toddler seats for strollers because of a fall hazard.

FDA 10/22/2012 - Rudi's Organic Bakery, Inc. is voluntarily withdrawing breads due to the possible presence of metallic foreign objects in select products or product packaging.

FDA 10/19/2012 - Energizer Holdings Inc. is voluntarily recalling continuous spray Banana Boat sun care products due to a potential risk of the product igniting on the skin if contact is made with a source of fire ignition before the product is completely dry.

FDA 10/19/2012 - Wegmans is voluntarily withdrawing brownie mixes because of undeclared ingredients (milk, pecans).

FDA 10/18/2012 - Gilster-Mary Lee is voluntarily recalling its Better Valu Fruit Whirls Cereal because of undeclared almond contents.

CPSC 10/18/2012 - Dream on Me is voluntarily recalling its highchairs because of a strangulation hazard relating to openings in the seat.

CPSC 10/18/2012 - Dream on Me is voluntarily recalling its infant swings because of a strangulation hazard relating to openings in the swing set.

CPSC 10/18/2012 - Trend Lab is voluntarily recalling children’s upholstered chairs due to laceration and choking hazards. The staples in the binding on the back of the chair may come loose.

CPSC 10/16/2012 - Children’s Apparel Network is voluntarily recalling its fleece hoodies and t-shirt because of a violation of the lead paint standard, sold exclusively at Target.

NHTSA 10/13/2012 - Evenflo Big Kid is voluntarily recalling factory select booster seats due to packaging without instruction manual or registration cards; the seats were meant for retail display but were shipped for sale by accident.

FDA 10/12/2012 - Hannaford Supermarkets is voluntarily alerting customers that, because of a label printing error, Red Velvet Cake Truffle and Triple Chocolate Cake Truffle sold at its stores in the bakery department may contain undeclared allergens.

CPSC 10/09/2012 - Graco is voluntarily recalling classic wood highchairs in which the seats can become detached from the wooden base, resulting in a fall hazard. The company has received reports of bumps, bruises and scratches. There was a report of a concussion from Canada.

FDA 10/08/2012 - Kellogg's is voluntarily recalling Frosted Mini-Wheats Bite Size Original and Mini-Wheats Unfrosted Bite Size because of metal fragments in product.

CPSC 10/04/2012 - Buy Buy Baby is voluntarily recalling Pink Angel embroidered girls' denim shorts due to choking hazard; the decorative studs can detach and child could swallow.

CPSC 10/02/2012 - Haier America is voluntarily recalling 42-inch LED-TVs due to risk of injury from television tipover; TV stand’s “neck” cracking and breaking.

PRODUCT AND SAFETY NEWS

Hurricane Sandy
Safe Kids and federal agencies are making a concerted effort to help parents and caregivers emerge from the historic storm safely. First and foremost, using portable generators indoors or too close to the home after losing power can lead to dangerously high levels of carbon monoxide and possibly CO poisoning.  Find more tips on staying safe after the storm at our website, and through CPSC, FEMA and the U.S. Fire Administration. 

Salmonella
The FDA continues to recall products because of an ongoing Salmonella outbreak.

$650,000 Fine
Aqua-Leisure, which failed to report a drowning risk in its baby boats, agreed to pay a $650,000 civil penalty. “Federal law requires manufacturers, distributors, and retailers to report to CPSC immediately (within 24 hours) after obtaining information reasonably supporting the conclusion that a product contains a defect which could create a substantial product hazard, creates an unreasonable risk of serious injury or death, or fails to comply with any consumer product safety rule or any other rule, regulation, standard, or ban enforced by CPSC.”

Buckyballs and Buckycubes Discontinued
Maxfield & Oberton announced that it was discontinuing its rare earth magnet products, Buckyballs and Buckycubes following the CPSC’s effort to recall it. The company is selling its remaining magnet sets and donating 20% of its profits to Hurricane Sandy relief efforts.

SEPTEMBER RECALLS

FDA 09/30/2012 - The FDA is investigating a multistate outbreak of salmonella infections possibly linked to Trader Joe's Valencia Creamy Salted Peanut Butter.

FDA 09/28/2012 - Justin’s is voluntary recalling its Classic Peanut Butter and Honey Peanut Butter single-serve squeeze packs because of possible salmonella contamination.

FDA 09/28/2012 - Oregon Ice Cream Company is voluntarily recalling Alden's Peanut Butter'n Chip and Cascade Glacier Chocolate Peanut Butter because of possible salmonella contamination.

FDA 09/28/2012 - Grand BK is voluntarily recalling 7 oz units of Black & Mix Crisp and Crisp Mix because it may contain peanuts.

FDA 09/28/2012 - Sunland Inc. is voluntarily expanding a recall to include its Cashew Butter, Tahini and Roasted Blanched Peanut Products because of a possible salmonella contamination.

FDA 09/28/2012 - Jers Chocolates is voluntarily recalling its Gourmet Peanut Butter Bars and Gourmet Jer’s Squares because of a possible salmonella contamination.

FDA 09/28/2012 - The Stop & Shop Supermarkets are voluntarily recalling mini peanut butter sandwich crackers due to possible salmonella contamination.

FDA 09/28/2012 - Whole Foods is voluntarily recalling two bulk bin items (Peanut Butter Power Chews and Treasure Trove Mix) due to potential salmonella contamination.

FDA 09/27/2012 - Harry and David, LLC is voluntarily recalling its Crunchy Almond and Peanut Butter,Creamy Banana Peanut Spread, and Creamy Raspberry Peanut Spread as well as the following multi-component food items which included the above-named peanut butter products: Apple Snack Box, Wolferman’s® Bee Sweet Gift Basket, Wolferman’s® Hearty Snack Gift Basket, Wolferman’s® All-Day Assortment Gift Basket, and Wolferman’s® Father’s Day basket.

CPSC 09/27/2012 - Dillon Importing is recalling the Captain Cutlass Toy Pirate Pistols because of excessive quantities of lead. (Note: Sold as a Halloween toy.)

CPSC 09/27/2012 - ADS is voluntarily recalling its Cyclone swing seats because the seats are breaking, posing a fall hazard.

CPSC 09/27/2012 - Atomic Aquatics is voluntarily recalling its Cobalt Dive Computer, a hand-held device. The lens of the computer can blow off suddenly, possibly causing impact injuries. It can also cause a gas leak and is a drowning hazard. Health Canada is also involved in this recall.

CPSC 09/26/2012 - Wilson & Fisher is voluntarily recalling its log-style garden swings because the wooden seats are breaking posing a fall hazard.

CPSC 09/20/2012 - Hayneedle is voluntarily recalling its Wooden Arc hammock stands because the layers of wood in the stand can separate and fall, causing the stand to break. This causes a fall hazard.

FDA 09/20/2012 - Watson Laboratories, Inc. is voluntarily recalling two lots of Hydrocodone Bitartrate and APAP Tablets. It is possible that some tablets from those lots exceed the weight specification and may contain higher than indicated amounts of the ingredients Hydrocodone Bitartrate and/or Acetaminophen.

CPSC 09/18/2012 - H & M is voluntarily recalling children’s water bottle due to choking hazard. The spout can break off causing the child to choke.

FDA 09/13/2012 - Berkey Creamery at Penn State is voluntarily recalling ice cream and frozen yogurt which may contain small plastic objects.

CPSC 09/12/2012 - Bluestem Brands is voluntarily recalling Ranger Rider Ride-on Toy Cars due to fire and burn hazards.

CPSC 09/06/2012 - Blind Xpress is voluntarily recalling 450,000 window blinds in cooperation with the CPSC, based on the 2009 strangulation death of a Michigan two-year-old. The child was reportedly strangled in the loop of a vertical blind cord.

CPSC 9/4/2012 - Meijer Stores is voluntarily recalling bicycles due to pedals detaching and causing a fall hazard. It involves various models of Huffy, Iron Horse, Mongoose, Northwoods, Pacific, Razor and Schwinn bicycles. (Please note the assembly error is not due to any actions or inactions of the manufacturers.)
