TAKE ACTION: Don't Let Kids Fall Off the Fiscal Cliff
Write to Congress and the White House
Safe Kids is calling on all families to send messages to the White House and Congress to urge your elected officials to support lifesaving child safety programs. Please send an email to your congressman, senators, and the White House, with the following talking points:
- Take our country and child safety off the cliff. Unintentional injury is the number one killer of kids. If the cliff happens, kids safety programs may be cut by as much as $4.6 billion.
- Please don’t cut departments and agencies which deal with child safety in a budget agreement and as the budget process continues in 2014.
- Domestic programs, including child safety programs, have already suffered consecutive budget cuts and can’t afford any more. For example, in 2010 and 2011, Congress cut funding for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) by 11 percent. Sequestration would add an additional 11 percent in cuts on top of that.
- Arbitrary budget cuts to child safety programs would cost society more overall in the long-term. For example, every dollar spent on a child safety seat saves $42 dollars in health care costs.
- Kids are the most vulnerable people in America. They don’t have lobbyists. They need you to watch out for their safety.
