United States Model School Zone Project
School Name: English Estates Elementary School
City: Fern Park, Florida
Number of Students: 730
Safe Kids Seminole County has identified a number of challenges for children who walk to and from English Estates Elementary School. Crosswalks near the school are faded, and parents are dropping off students at undesignated locations.
Safe Kids Seminole County is installing safety signage, lights and a high-visibility crosswalk, restriping existing crosswalks, designing safer traffic patterns and implementing a walking school bus program. The goal of the walking school buses is to encourage more students to walk to and from school as a group with adult supervision.
Where We Are
Oct. 25, 2012 - We continue to implement interventions, including environmental modifications, development of a pedestrian safety brochurefor teachers and caregivers, and monitoring of car speedaround the school. After we complete all interventions, we will begin the last phase of the project: collecting post-assessment data to evaluate the effectiveness of our interventions.
July 23, 2012 - We have started implementing interventions around the school, including installing designated staging areas for the walking school buses, and will be installing a high-visibility crosswalk in the coming months.
May 9, 2012 - We worked with the Community Traffic Safety Team, school administrators and law enforcement to complete Phase I of the project. This included conducting the baseline assessment and creating the intervention work plan. We began to implement interventions in April 2012.
