Program Manager - Recreational Safety
Lindsay is the Recreational Safety Program Manager at Safe Kids Worldwide, where she provides leadership, expertise and management of Safe Kids’ national educational initiatives on youth sports injury prevention. The Youth Sports Safety Program aims to keep kids active, healthy and safe while playing the sports they love. The program consists of sports injury prevention clinics, conducted by our U.S. coalitions across the country, where youth coaches, parents and athletes are provided with information and tools on acute and overuse injury prevention, proper hydration habits, annual physical screenings and concussion prevention, recognition and responses.
Lindsay has also had experience in past programs and efforts such as Safe Kids Buckle Up, Safe Kids Week and the open water safety program Kids Don’t Float. She is a risk-area expert on recreational and sports safety as well as bicycle safety. She is responsible for the planning, implementation and evaluation of recreational programs executed throughout the Safe Kids Worldwide network of more than 600 coalitions and chapters nationwide.
Lindsay holds a bachelor’s degree from The University of North Carolina Pembroke, where she worked on community-based projects that aimed to improve childhood health and reduce obesity. She obtained her master’s degree in public health, specializing in communications and marketing, at The George Washington University School of Public Health and Health Services.

As the program manager of our national Youth Sports Safety Program, my job at Safe Kids Worldwide is to understand the current climate, and collaborate with key players, in the youth sports safety arena. This includes learning about the attitudes and beliefs that athletes, parents and coaches hold that lead them to take (or not take) certain steps when it comes to preventing injuries.

My job is a pretty good one. When I’m asked what I do at Safe Kids, I usually distill my answer to three things: make sure kids have fun, stay active and are free from injury. Not a bad 9-5, right? Practically speaking, much of my time is spent on the third item, keeping kids safe while at play.

Hot chocolate, sledding, snowmen, icicles, snowball fights—oh, to be a kid again!
If we as adults harnessed just a fraction of the sheer anticipation, enthusiasm, and delight that children have for the winter season, winter would come and go much more quickly, for us adults. .

Oh, to be a kid again…waking up on the morning you know you’re spending the whole day at an amusement park. I remember wanting to do everything, as soon as I arrived.

Is summer over already? Not quite but as I walk through my local chain store with its back-to-school ads and sale items, I could think the first day of school is, well, tomorrow.

Do you remember your childhood playground? I do. It was a grand castle, replete with everything that translated to fun, excitement, curiosity and sheer joy for a child. I can also remember, at times, how dangerous it was.

The winter season is certainly upon us, and as we all know, when the air gets colder and the snow starts falling, kids head outside to the great outdoors to ski, snowboard, sled, snowmobile and ice skate. While these winter activities provide hours of fun for our children, they also pose risks for injury.
