Why are parents challenged by these life-saving devices? Could you design a better car seat? It is estimated that every two weeks a child was hospitalised with serious injuries (1998-2001 and 2001-2005) received from a vehicle driving on a private driveway in New Zealand. A further five children were killed annually, on average, in the same period. Our goal: raise public awareness on the dangers posed by driveways and vehicles to children, and advocate for physical and environment modification measures that will improve the safety of children in driveways through the Safekids Campaign. The Safekids Campaign is a national child injury prevention, capacity building and public awareness programme. The Campaign aims to empower partners, coalitions, communities, indigenous and other ethnic groups, families, and like-minded individuals in working towards a common goal - preventing childhood injury and improving child health outcomes. The Asia Injury Prevention (AIP) Foundation is implementing a public awareness campaign in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and Danang, leading up to the May 11 launch of the Decade of Action for Road Safety. The public awareness campaign features 10 celebrities promoting the message “Together we can save millions of lives” and provides facts about traffic fatalities and simple interventions –such as helmet and seat belt use- relevant to Vietnam. The media campaign includes television commercials, more than 100 billboards nationwide, street banners, and press coverage. AIP Foundation will also work with the Vietnamese government to project the Decade of Action for Road Safety tag on significant landmarks in Vietnam’s two major cities- Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. The tag will be projected on the Reunification Palace in Ho Chi Minh City and Dong Xuan Market in Hanoi. In addition, AIP Foundation and the Australian Embassy will hold a Helmets for Kids launch ceremony at the Mai Dich school in Hanoi, providing helmets and road safety education to students and teachers. The Governor General of Australia will attend the ceremony and give a brief speech in support of the Decade of Action for Road Safety. Contact: Mirjam Sidik Highlights |
