How We Work

Every year, unintentional injuries kill 700,000 children worldwide. Ninety-eight percent of these deaths occur in low-income countries, where injury approaches disease as the leading cause of death for children. In industrialized countries, unintentional injury is the number one cause of death among children ages 1 to 14.

From Uganda to the United States, Safe Kids collaborates with fellow non-government organizations, establishes branch offices and cooperates with our sponsors to bring injury prevention programs and information to families who need it the most.

No single solution effectively prevents all unintentional childhood injuries, but many can be prevented with simple safety measures, including:

  • Educating adults and children
  • Creating safe environments
  • Conducting research and promoting results
  • Passing and strengthening child safety laws and regulations
  • Providing safety devices to families who need them

You can see Safe Kids’ work in action through some activities of our member countries:

  • Teaching families about transporting children safely in cars in Brazil and on motor bikes in Vietnam.
  • Creating standards for safety signage on ski slopes in Austria.
  • Raising awareness of child pedestrians on the streets of Mumbai, India, through collaboration with the Mumbai Traffic Police or in a safety celebration at a public park in Kawempe, Uganda.
  • Checking car seats and booster seats for proper installation and educating families about safety in and around vehicles in the United States.

Many Safe Kids Worldwide programs are ongoing activities that get community members involved in child safety initiatives.
