The School
School Name: Seoul Gumsan Elementary School

The Issue
Between 2009 and 2010, there were 86 traffic accidents in the neighborhood surrounding Seoul Gumsan Elementary School, resulting in 89 injuries to children and claiming one child’s life. Students have to cross in front of a heavy traffic, one-way road which is curved and prevents drivers and pedestrians from seeing the oncoming traffic flow clearly.

The project
Alongside students, teachers, and other community members, Safe Kids Korea will install traffic-calming measures such as a skid-proof pavement and directional road signs around the school and has painted the school wall to increase awareness about the school zone among drivers.

UPDATES
October 25, 2012 - We have completed environmental modifications, education for children and school wall paintings.  Parents' education sessions will take place in the first few weeks of November and police will continue to ticket illegal parking around the school through December.  We will begin the last phase of the project in December 2012.
July 23, 2012 - We have painted the wall around the school to increase visibility among drivers, installed skid proof pavement and repainted the crosswalks to minimize risks during inclement weather. We will complete the remaining interventions by October 31.
May 9, 2012 - Working with crossing guards, parents, teachers, police officials and traffic professionals, we completed Phase I of the project. This included conducting the baseline assessment and creating the intervention work plan. We began to implement interventions in May 2012
