Each project is executed in three phases: assessment, interventions and evaluation.

Phase I: Assessment
September 2011 – March 2012

In Phase I, each community convenes a group of partners to collect data on the current situation at the selected school, noting the number of traffic accidents, the environment, the level of knowledge and typical behaviors of the road users. Armed with this information, the community partners work with experts to identify what needs to be done to improve safety around their school and creates a plan.

Phase II: Interventions
April 2012 – October 2012

This is when the work is done to make permanent improvements in the environments around the schools. During Phase II, Safe Kids organizations will also work to increase knowledge and awareness among the children and the members of the community who will use the roads.

Phase III: Evaluation
November 2012 – March 2013

What worked? What didn’t? What was learned? Safe Kids will measure the effectiveness of the changes that took place in the school zones during Phase II. Safe Kids will then take the lessons learned from the pilot program to recommend evidence-based interventions that can be used in other school zones around the world.
