Results for Safe Kids Canada’s survey supporting this year’s Safe Kids Week theme were highlighted in media releases and a video news release, earning almost 18 million media impressions by mid-June. The survey revealed that while nearly all Canadian parents who were surveyed 98%) felt it was important to lock up medications and cleaning products, half stored drugs in a medicine cabinet, while more than 60 percent stored cleaning products under the sink – both places in the home are often easily accessible to children. With support from Kidde, Safe Kids Canada awarded 25 grants to community groups for Safe Kids Week activities and events. Materials distributed included discounted carbon monoxide alarms, poison emergency number decals, a carbon monoxide poisoning flyer and a general poison prevention flyer, which were created in partnership with government and corporate sponsors. Safe Kids Canada was also involved in advocacy activities to reduce child poisonings in Canada, including legislation that would require carbon monoxide detectors in all Ontario homes. June 3, 2012
