Safe Kids Festival in India

December 15, 2011

Safe Kids Foundation India, in collaboration with Brihanmumbai Mahapalika Shikshak Sabha, organized a day-long “Safe Kids Festival” at Narayanguru High School in Mumbai, with participation from 13 FedEx volunteers. Approximately 200 eighth and ninth grade children formed a “human chain” on either side of the road outside the school, while also holding up banners and placards with road safety messages.

Essay, drawing and elocution competitions were also held during the festival for children in grades three through eight, with participation from 124 students. During the prize distribution ceremony where parents and teachers also attended, 720 students sang a song about road safety and pledged to be safe road users.  A PHOTOVOICE exhibition was also displayed during the festival where approximately 1000 students from Grades three and four visited the exhibition.

The Safe Kids Festival was planned as a part of the Walk This Way, pedestrian safety program in India. Safe Kids Worldwide and program sponsor FedEx created Safe Kids Walk This Way to teach safe behavior to motorists and child pedestrians and create safer, more walkable communities. The goal of the initiative is preventing pedestrian-related injury to children. Since the launch of the program in spring 2000 in the United States, Safe Kids Walk This Way has spanned the globe, engaging FedEx volunteers to reach families in hundreds of communities throughout the world.
