Latest NewsSafe Kids Vietnam/AIP Foundation Eighth Country to Launch Safe Kids Walk This WayJanuary 25, 2010 More than 90% of road traffic deaths occur in low-income and middle-income countries, and in Vietnam pedestrians are among the most vulnerable. With the aim of educating students on pedestrian safety and saving lives, on December 17, 2009, Safe Kids Vietnam/Asia Injury Prevention Foundation (AIP Foundation) launched the Walk This Way program with 4,000 primary school children in Ho Chi Minh City. Thanks to generous support from FedEx Express, Vietnam is the eighth country to launch the Safe Kids Walk This Way program. Under the program, Safe Kids Vietnam/AIP Foundation conducted surveys at 20 primary schools in Ho Chi Minh City and selected four schools for the project. The objectives of this program are to stimulate, encourage and inspire children, teachers, parents and relatives as well as the local community to be aware of good pedestrian safety knowledge and practice. With three integrated components - environment modifications, pedestrian safety education and enforcement - and the involvement of local authorities and FedEx volunteers, this project helps to create a sustainable, safe environment for students, teachers and parents when traveling to and from school on foot. Safe Kids Vietnam /AIP Foundation also provides a training workshop on pedestrian safety for nearly 100 core teachers at the target schools. Traffic safety corners on school grounds, with working traffic lights, zebra crossings and traffic safety signs, allow students to practice their pedestrian safety skills in a real-world setting and bring the lessons outside of the classroom. As a part of the program, Safe Kids Vietnam /AIP Foundation also constructs or redesigns sidewalks surrounding schools to provide a safe environment for students who walk every day. The launch ceremony received positive feedback from partners of Safe Kids Vietnam /AIP Foundation, including government agencies, school teachers, parents, local authorities and volunteers from FedEx Express Vietnam offices.
