Safety 2012 World Conference in Wellington, New Zealand

World Conference On Injury Prevention 2012

From October 1-4, Safe Kids staff and network members participated in the 11th World Conference on Injury Prevention and Safety Promotion in Wellington, New Zealand, where Safe Kids Worldwide hosted an exhibitor booth and met potential network members.

Members of Safe Kids staff and network members from Australia, Brazil, Israel, New Zealand, Philippines, United States and Vietnam made presentations on topics including road safety and button battery ingestion safety. Safe Kids Worldwide staff also led panels with six network members on the topics of Photovoice: Children’s Perspectives on Road Traffic Safety in Ten Countries and Cross-cultural Comparisons of Parents’ Knowledge, Attitudes and Behaviors Related to Child Safety.

Nine network members presented 18 research and program posters during the conference on topics including Helmets for Kids Program Increases Helmet Use Among Students in Vietnam, Distance Course for Child Injury Prevention in Brazil, A Safe Candle Project in South Africa and Expanded Measure of Pediatric Injury in Israel.

Safe Kids Worldwide is a global network of organizations dedicated to providing parents and caregivers with practical and proven resources to protect kids from unintentional injuries. Throughout the world, almost one million children die of an injury each year, and every one of these tragedies is preventable. Safe Kids works with an extensive network of more than 600 coalitions in the U.S. and in 23 countries to reduce traffic injuries, drownings, falls, burns, poisonings and more.

Network Members

The Safe Kids Worldwide network currently consists of 23 diverse member organizations: Australia, Austria, Brazil, Canada, China, Germany, India, Israel, Italy, JordanMalaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Philippines, Serbia, South Africa, South Korea, Thailand, Uganda, Uruguay, United Arab Emirates, United States, and Vietnam.  Serbia joined the Safe Kids Worldwide network this year.

The Safe Kids in Action 2012 Global Activity Report provides a comprehensive picture of each member organization and their work to reduce injuries to children around the world. Content in each report is organized around six areas: Country Profile, Top Five Injury Risk Areas, Current Programs, Accomplishments, Partnerships and Research.

The reports reflect Safe Kids Worldwide's core principles of mobilizing communities at the grassroots level by conducting public education programs, creating safer environments, advocating for effective laws and regulations, and conducting research. This edition of the report includes information from June 2011 through July 2012.

Country Profile

This section contains demographic information, including the total population, number of children ages 15 years and younger, income group, and gross national income per capita. Data was gathered from the Population Reference Bureau's statistics and the World Health Organization Status Report on Road Safety (2009).

Top Five Injury Risk Areas

These tables depict the top five causes of mortality and morbidity among children for the age groups specified, using the best available data. Where national level data was not available, countries provided data from hospitals or other secondary data sources.

Current Programs

Programs are organized according to the risk area they address. Risk areas range from broad categories, such as 'Road Safety' to more specific categories such as 'Motorcycle/Helmet Safety,' depending on the scope of the programs. Programs that address multiple risk areas are classified as 'All Risk Areas.'

Accomplishments

Network members report their accomplishments in the areas of media generated, awards received, programs launched and highlight the conferences where programs and research were presented over the past year.

Partnerships

This section details the various types of organizations, partners and funders the organization works with, including the number of years of the partnership and areas of collaboration.

Research

Descriptions of research studies that Safe Kids organizations conducted, including the partners involved, target population, objective, methodology and key findings are provided in this section. Completed studies and ongoing projects are described.
