Safe Kids VietnamSafe Kids Vietnam/Asia Injury Prevention Foundation (AIP Foundation) has been a member of Safe Kids Worldwide since 2002. The AIP believes the most effective way to improve road safety in developing Asian countries is to build partnerships with interested parties, including nonprofits, businesses and governments. The rationale behind this approach is that working together toward a common goal of road safety has a greater impact than working individually.

Helmet Handover Ceremonies in Cambodia and Thailand

The Helmets for Kids Program is an innovative grassroots program that brings together private and public sectors to provide helmets and traffic safety education for primary school students. Program components include teacher and student education, crash investigations, monitoring and surveillance, and daily traffic safety instruction inside and outside of the classroom. Since 2000, Asian Injury Prevention (AIP) Foundation has distributed more than 500,000 helmets worldwide through this program.

As a part of their Helmet for Kids Program, Safe Kids Vietnam/AIP Foundation holds ceremonies to symbolically handover helmets to children. These ceremonies consist of student performances and children expressing their commitment to improving road safety in their countries. This summer, handover ceremonies were held in Cambodia and Thailand.

AIP Foundation held its first Helmets for Kids handover ceremony in Phnom Penh, Cambodia in July 2011. ANZ Royal Bank donated 453 helmets to teachers and students of York Batr Primary School, concluding a week-long training on road traffic safety and correct helmet usage, which was attended by 35 of the school’s teachers. The event attracted over 50 road safety stakeholders, including the WHO, HIB, CRY and representatives from several Cambodian governmental departments.

A successful “Helmets for Kids” ceremony was also held at Wat Suwan School in Lomluka, Patumtanee, Thailand over the summer.  At the ceremony, sponsor Johnson Diversey donated 280 helmets to the school children.
