Start Safe: Water

Learn more about the Safe Kids Worldwide Start Safe Water ProgramSafe Kids Worldwide partnered with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, the National Head Start Association, Young Minds Inspired and water safety experts to create Start Safe: Water.

Start Safe: Water is a free educational program designed to teach children ages 2 to 4 and their families about water safety and provide educators the tools they need to deliver important water safety information.

The program emphasizes three key messages associated with using layers of protection in and around water: Lock, Look, Learn.

Safety messages are delivered to children, parents and caregivers through educators, local Safe Kids coalitions and the fire service.

Safe Kids coalitions distributed more than 1,700 Start Safe Water parent booklets and 5,300 student storybooks in educational sessions conducted in the summer of 2012. Safe Kids developed 8,000 Start Safe DVDs to distribute to safety educators and other organizations involved in drowning prevention education, as well as 382 Safe Kids coalitions and 4,300 Head Start centers.
