Losing a colleague, a friend, is tough. Emilie Crown was such an advocate, such a dedicated Child Passenger Safety instructor, such a passionate person. She ran her local Safe Kids Coalition Buckle Up program in Montgomery County, Md. with events several times a week. Her passing is a huge loss for her family, Safe Kids, the CPS community and all the technicians and parents who were the beneficiaries of her relentless and passionate efforts. She was our “go to” leader for everything from reviewing programs to organizing events to media outreach.
New research evaluates the impact of The Safe Kids Buckle Up Program™ inspection events on caregiver knowledge, skill and confidence in installing their child's car seat.
In our latest Gary on the Street video, Gary talks to parents about an often misunderstood part of the car seat: the top tether.
At Safe Kids Day in Palm Beach County, FL, a young middle school boy in a bright red Safe Kids Day shirt greets guests and passes out My High 5 booklets. He shows them where to get in line to pick out their free bike helmet. The boy has some difficulties speaking and seems shy. His mom explains how they began volunteering for their local Safe Kids coalition. One day, he fell off his bike, was not wearing a helmet, and suffered a traumatic brain injury.
As we get closer to International Walk to School Day on October 9, I can’t help but think about how many more countries are desperately in need of pedestrian safety initiatives and education. One of those countries is my home in Simferopol, Ukraine.
I traveled back this past August for the first time in a few years. There were so many things about my hometown that stayed the same since I left in 1995; things I hadn’t even noticed as a child. They just became a fact of everyday life when I was growing up there.

February 2014 Product Safety Recalls
I’m a big guy. At six foot eight, it’s hard to believe that there is much of anything that scares me. What’s more, I’m an athlete. My entire life, I’ve been taught to put myself out there and take chances on the court. When I joined the NBA in 2005, I took the skills that I developed in college to the next level. Playing on the professional level you can’t allow yourself to be intimidated by other players or the pressure of the cheering crowds.
