You may have seen stories in the news lately about the use of booster seats for children who weigh less than 40 pounds. Many caregivers struggle with the decision of when to move a child from a car seat to a booster seat and often place their children in booster seats before the child has outgrown the car seat.
Safe Kids Worldwide is celebrating child passenger safety (CPS) throughout the month of September.
Vehicle crashes are a leading cause of death and injury for American children and correctly used child safety seats can reduce the risk of death by as much as 71 percent. Unfortunately, almost 60 percent of car seats are not used or installed correctly.
WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood today joined National Highway Traffic Safety Administrator David Strickland and Safe Kids President and CEO Kate Carr for the kick-off of Child Passenger Safety Week to remind parents and caregivers to make sure that they are properly using and installing their child safety seats. A new National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) survey shows that parents are making five significant mistakes when using car seats and booster seats.
Parents learn of car seat information through a variety of trusted sources. The information may or may not reflect best practice but can grab attention because it sounds so easy to do and uses simple language. A recent article from Consumer Reports (December 10, 2015) urged parents to discontinue use of their rear-facing only “infant” (RFO) car seats at age one and move to a rear-facing convertible seat regardless of the recommendations from the manufacturer who creates, tests and markets products with both regulations and safety in mind.
