And How to Stay Safe While You're at It
It’s true, summer is almost over. So I have an idea: let’s forget about all the things we have to do to get ready for the school year and finish out the summer in style with a great Labor Day weekend.
Here are three ideas that can help.
Number 3
Summer time and warmer weather means more chances to show off your grill skills. Of course, any good grill expert knows the recipe for safety is just as important as the recipe for your favorite burgers, pork chops, or grilled mushroom kabobs. Just in case, here are 6 ways to keep your kids, and yourself, safe around the grill:
During our Safe Kids Worldwide leadership conference, I spent the day with several of our international partners, who traveled to Washington, D.C. to share and learn about the best ways to keep kids safe.
We have partner organizations in 27 countries around the world, virtually on every continent except Antarctica. The amazing people who lead these programs have unique and extraordinary experiences about what it takes to keep kids safe. They’re people we want everyone to meet so we decided to interview them on-camera.
When you wonder what we mean at Safe Kids when we say our mission is to protect kids from preventable injuries, think about the Contreras family. Early Sunday morning, a fire broke out in an apartment in the Little Village neighborhood of Chicago. Ten kids ages 3-months-old to 16-years-old died, including two 14-year-olds who recently died of their injuries at Stroger Hospital. The Contreras family was hosting a sleepover with their cousins.
Summer has always been my favorite time of the year. My family does not let a summer weekend go by without finding something to celebrate and a reason to get together and have a barbecue - Memorial Day, Father’s Day, the 4th of July and 4 birthdays all within a week of each other at the end of July (mine, my mom, my daughter, and my sister)! My husband and I recently became homeowners, so our families can’t wait to come over and fire up the grill at our new place.
How to Prevent Burns in the Kitchen
- Create a kid-free zone. Teach younger children to stay at least 3 feet away from your cooking space.
Car seat...Check.
Crib with no bumpers...Check.
Diapers, wipes, cute clothes...Check, check, check.
Smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors that work…Check (of course).
Over the river, through the woods, down the highway and off on a plane we go. Holiday travel season is here and it’s an extra special one for me because it’s my baby’s first Thanksgiving. Not only are we travelling to Grandma’s house, but we’re off to aunts’, uncles’ and cousins’ houses as well – at least I don’t have to do the cooking this year.
