Playground Safety for Big Kids At Play
Big kids love playgrounds as much as they did when they were little. However, as children develop, some playground equipment may not be appropriate for their size. Playground injury is the most common school-related injury among children ages 5 to 14, with many injuries resulting from falls.
Keep children safe at play, whether on the swings or running around in the yard.
Top Tips:
Before play:
- Check playgrounds where your children play. Look for age-appropriate equipment and hazards, such as rusted or broken equipment and dangerous surfaces. Report any hazards to the school or municipality.
- Avoid playing on non-impact absorbing surfaces, like concrete or gravel.
- Remove hood and neck drawstrings from all children’s outerwear to avoid strangulation hazards.
- Remove bike helmets before using any playground equipment.
During play:
- Always supervise children when using playground equipment.
- Ensure that children use age-appropriate playground equipment.
- Teach children proper playground behavior: no pushing, shoving or crowding.
