Preteens and teenagers don’t like to be treated like they are children, but the truth is they still need help staying safe. During these years, 10- to 14-year-olds struggle for independence and control and spend more time not being supervised by adults. While some preteens and teens think they are mature enough to stay home alone, parents must determine if the individual child has the right skills to stay safe. While this age group is at a much lower risk of dying in a fire, home fires remain a concern, and older children are more likely to intentionally set fires.
