Burn Prevention for Pre-teens and Teens At Home
Flame burns (caused by direct contact with fire) are more prevalent among older children. Fire is just one cause of burn injuries — children can also be seriously injured by hot liquids, heating appliances, hot pots and pans, electrical currents and chemicals. In 2007, children ages 10 to 14 had the highest fireworks injury rate 2007 among all age groups.
Top Tips
In the kitchen:
- Do not allow preteens to use a microwave until they are both tall enough to reach in safely and able to understand that steam can cause burns.
- Always supervise preteens in the kitchen and around electrical appliances and outlets.
Around the house:
- Keep matches, gasoline, lighters and all other flammable materials locked away.
- Teach preteens to never play with matches, lighters or fireworks.
- Install a carbon monoxide detector to alert everyone to get out of the house should the odorless toxic gas given off by fuel-burning appliances build up.
