Safe Kids United Arab Emirates: >Child Passenger Safety Training in Abu Dhabi: Road traffic accidents are the second leading cause of death in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), which also has one of the world’s highest rates of road deaths

With support from Children’s National Medical Center and the Safe Kids Buckle Up program, and in collaboration with the Health Authority of Abu Dhabi, Safe Kids Worldwide conducted a four-day child safety certification class in Abu Dhabi in December for medical professionals, child care providers, police officers and others.

As a result, 15 new child passenger safety technicians and educators are now the leading experts in child passenger safety in the country and are equipped to educate others in a region where most in the class and many in the Emirate had never used car seats for their children.

Safe Kids Canada: World’s First Mandatory Snow Sports Helmet Law: On December 14, Canada became a world leader with the passage of Bill 131: the Snow Sports Helmet Act. The world’s first legislation of its kind will require skiers and snowboarders of all ages to wear helmets in Nova Scotia.

The work on the legislation began shortly after the Safe Kids Canada Vancouver Ski and Snowboard Charter event held in November 2009, which brought together injury prevention experts, ski hill operators and the public to discuss the issue of helmets while skiing and snowboarding. The legislation has been passed and will take effect November 1, 2012

The Province of Nova Scotia has issued a news release with additional information about the new law.
