Safe Kids is committed to keeping you informed about recalls of kids’ oriented products.  While it is important to keep aware of all recalls, Safe Kids urges you to pay particular attention to ones in red, as they are associated with one or more deaths (THERE IS A RECENT RECALL INVOLVING 450,000 WINDOW BLINDS, 2-YEAR-OLD DIES).

We also include news about child and product safety below—see a CPSC warning about keeping cleaning supplies secure.

AUGUST/EARLY SEPTEMBER RECALLS 

CPSC 09/06/2012 - Blind Xpress voluntarily recalls 450,000 window blinds in cooperation with the CPSC, based on the 2009 strangulation death of a Michigan two-year-old. The child was reportedly strangled in the loop of a vertical blind cord. 

CPSC 9/4/2012 - Meijer Stores voluntarily recalls bicycles due to pedals detaching and causing a fall hazard.

CPSC 8/30/2012 - Summer Infant voluntarily recalls baby bathers due to fall and injury hazard.

CPSC  8/23/2012 - IDM Group voluntarily recalls CareBears Pacifier due to choking hazard.

CPSC 8/22/2012 -  Energizer voluntarily recalls Energizer Rotating Night Lights due to burn hazard; sold exclusively at Target.

FDA 8/21/2012 -  American Licorice Company voluntarily recalls 16 oz. Red Vines® Black Licorice Twists due to elevated levels of lead.

CPSC 8/21/2012 - Kickboard USA voluntarily recalls children's scooter due to laceration hazard.

CPSC 8/16/2012  - PBteen voluntarily recalls bunk beds due to risk of injury.

CPSC 8/16/2012 - Babylicious voluntarily recalls Cloth Crib Fringe, a decorative fabric for around a crib, due to strangulation hazard.

CPSC 08/15/2012 - Bumbo International voluntarily recalls (for repair) its Bumbo Baby Seat because of a fall hazard.

CPSC 08/14/2012 - Toysmith voluntarily recalls its Animal Snap Bracelet because of a laceration hazard. 

FDA 08/13/2012 - Clif Bar & Company voluntarily recallis a small amount of 12-pack Blueberry Crisp CLIF® Cookie Bars and individual mislabeled Blueberry Crisp CLIF Bars in Chocolate Chip CLIF Bar Wrappers.

CPSC 08/07/2012 - My Clothes Inc. voluntarily recallis children’s pajamas because of violation of the federal flammability standard.

FDA 08/06/2012 - Reichel Foods, Inc. of Rochester, Minnesota voluntarily recalls a limited amount of Dippin’ Stix Sliced Apples & Caramel with Peanuts and Armour Active Packs Cheese Pizza Lunch Kits because of listeria risk.

CPSC 08/01/2012 - Midwest Folding Products voluntarily recalls its “stage and riser caddies” due to risks of fall, injury and death.  “Caddies” are used to store collapsible stages when they are not being used. At a Greenville, SC church, a 3-year-old girl died from severe head trauma when a portion of a portable stage fell out of the caddy and onto her.

PRODUCT AND SAFETY NEWS

Consumer Reports recently warned against the dangers of cleaning products around children. They noted that colorful and fruity smelling all-purpose cleaners can easily be mistaken for sports drinks. Consumer Reports recommends that parents who use such products be “hyper-vigilant about keeping it out of the reach of children and pets.” Safe Kids also recommends using child safety locks on cabinets where cleaners and other poisonous products are stored.

JULY RECALLS

CPSC 07/31/2012 - Green Toys voluntarily recalls its toy Mini Vehicles because of a choking hazard. Health Canada also participated in this recall action.

CPSC 07/31/2012 -  Liberty Mountain voluntarily recalls its VAUDE Kenta child carriers because of a fall hazard. Health Canada also participated in this recall action.

FDA 07/30/2012 - CLIF Bars announces a coconut allergy alert and voluntarily recalls its six-pack coconut chocolate chip cookies due to possible package mislabeling.

FDA 07/30/2012 - North Carolina Farm voluntarily recalls Athena cantaloupes because of listeria danger.     

FDA 07/27/2012 - Wimburger’s Old World Bakery and Delicatessen issues an allergy alert and voluntary recall on undeclared milk, soy and wheat in various kinds of bread: kaiser rolls, seeded rolls, brat buns, french bread, pretzel rolls, pretzels, pizza dough, hoagie rolls and baguettes.

CPSC 07/26/2012 - Burlington Coat Factory agrees to a $1.5 million civil penalty for failing to report drawstrings in children’s outerwear and for selling recalled outerwear, resulting in strangulation and entanglement risks.

CPSC 07/24/2012 - Kolcraft voluntarily recalls Contours Tandem Strollers due to fall and choking hazards.

CPSC 07/25/2012 - Retailers amazon.com and Brookstone voluntarily agreed to stop selling adult stress toys made of small but powerful magnets, Buckyballs and Buckycubes, because of a swallowing and gastrointestinal danger. But, the manufacturer, Maxfield & Oberton, did not voluntarily withdraw the products from the market and the CPSC filed an administrative lawsuit against the company.  Safe Kids has issued warnings against the mega-magnets in the past. 

CPSC 07/24/2012 - Peg Perego voluntarily recalls two different stroller models, the Pliko-P3 and the Venezia, due to risk of entrapment and strangulation; the death of a six-month-old child has been reported

FDA 07/24/2012 - Mount Franklin Foods has issued an allergy alert and voluntary recall for undeclared milk in Sunrise Indian corn candy.

FDA 07/24/2012 - Cass-Clay Creamery has issued an allergy alert on undeclared allergens in ice cream

CPSC 07/19/2012 - Downeast Concepts voluntarily recalls children’s beach chairs due to laceration hazard

CPSC 07/18/2012 - TRUMPF Medical Systems voluntarily recalls television-mounting system due to a falling hazard

CPSC 07/18/2012 - Samuel Lawrence Furniture has voluntarily expanded its recall of sleigh beds due to a fall hazard. Health Canada is also involved in this recall.

CPSC 07/16/2012 - Pauline USA voluntarily recalls Little Jumpers ALEX trampolines due to fall hazard and possible breakage of the handlebar.

CPSC 07/16/2012 - Battat Inc. agrees to $400,000 in civil penalty for failing to report children’s magnetic toy sets 

CPSC 07/12/2012 - Chicco voluntarily recalls Polly High Chairs due to laceration hazard (Children can fall on or against the pegs on the rear legs of the high chair, resulting in a bruising or laceration injury.) There were 21 reports of incidents involving this product.  Health Canada also participated in this recall.  

CPSC 07/12/2012 - Family Dollar Stores voluntarily recalls decorative light sets, manufactured in China. They failed to meet UL standards and are a fire and electrical shock hazard.

CPSC 07/12/2012 - Old Navy voluntarily recalls toddler girl Aqua Socks, manufactured in China, due to a slip and fall hazard. Health Canada also participated in this recall.

CPSC 07/11/2012 - Troxel voluntarily recalls 11 models of Flexible Flyer Swing Sets due to fall hazard. Health Canada also participated in this recall.  The company has received more than 1,200 reports of the seesaw breaking.

FDA 07/10/2012 - Sedona Labs voluntarily recalls iFlora Kids Multi-Probiotic, a children’s food supplement, due to possible Salmonella poisoning.

CPSC 07/05/2012 - iSi North America voluntarily recalls its Twist’n Sparkle Beverage Carbonation system due to an explosion hazard.

CPSC 07/03/2012 - Innovage voluntarily recalls its Discover Kids Lamps (Animated Marine and Safari lamps), manufactured in China, due to fire and burn hazards.

FDA 07/02/2012 - CareFusion voluntarily recalls its AirLife Infant Breathing Circuit—an adapter in the products could develop cracks during patient use, potentially resulting in a leak in the closed ventilation system and leading to a loss in the intended air input.
