Every year during National Poison Prevention Week (March 17 – 23), I think of my younger brother, Jim. And sometimes I even call to remind him of what happened 30 years ago.
My grandmother was babysitting my daughter, Jennifer, who was three-years-old at the time. Jim stopped by between law school classes and my grandmother asked him to look after Jennifer -- my grandmother had to run a quick errand. No problem for Jim, he'd done it plenty of times.

Safe Kids Worldwide Board of Directors and staff mourn the loss of former U.S. Surgeon General, Dr. C. Everett Koop, who died Monday at the age of 96. While Dr. Koop will be remembered most for his straightforward talk about AIDS and a deep commitment to telling the truth about smoking, he was also a great champion for child safety.

I want to tell you about a man who wears pink nail polish on his pinky finger. His name is Scott Deming. He's an international speaker, an author and a Buffalo Bills fan. But that's not why he wears the pink nail polish.

Halloween has always been a big deal for my family. Looking back now, there was something memorable every year. Sometimes it was a good thing (check out my daughter, Ally, in her homemade bunny suit). And sometimes a not-so-good thing (the year my son, Chris, was eight, and Halloween completely snuck up on my family so, with no regard for safety, we threw a white sheet over Chris's head, cut out a few eye holes, and told him he was a ghost.)

After an 18-hour, 8,000 mile plane ride, I’m thrilled to have landed safely in Wellington, New Zealand with several other members of the Safe Kids team. We started our visit by spending a day with Safe Kids New Zealand and received a traditional Maori greeting – a very special blessing for guests and delivered by their leading elder.

Thirty-two years ago, my first daughter, Jennifer, was born. When it was time to leave the hospital, she was placed lovingly in the back seat of our car, resting comfortably in a very nice but hardly secure Moses basket. That's right. Just a basket resting on the back seat
.
I didn't put Jenny in a Moses basket because I didn't have the resources for a car seat. Like every new parent, I would have done anything to protect my baby. I just didn't know any better.

This year Safe Kids Worldwide has reached a significant milestone. We are proud to celebrate our 15-year partnership on child passenger safety with the General Motors Foundation.
Since the inception of the Buckle Up program, we have worked together to achieve tremendous progress, measured in the lives of children saved and injuries prevented. Our most significant accomplishment is reflected in the near universal use of car seats for infants leaving the hospital at birth.

According to a recent study by the American Academy of Pediatrics, the hospitalization rate of children under the age of 19 due to drowning has declined 49 percent. This is great progress, but when you consider that nearly 100 percent of all drowning are preventable, it begs the question: how do we reduce the number of drownings to zero?
