Mr. England

By popular vote, "Mr. Bob" is hands down America's Favorite Crossing Guard. In any kind of weather, students will find him ready and waiting to take them across the state highway 28 towards Van Derveer Elementary School. Mr. England arrives early and stays passed his call of duty so that he can assure that all parents and students have a safe arrival to and from school. Mr. England goes beyond making sure our students are safe. He also makes sure the sidewalks are swept, leaves are raked and ice is cleared on a blustery day. None of those responsibilities are in his job description. He does it to make sure all the children are safe.

The road he crosses the children is also a state road, so he also makes sure all the litter is gone and away from the children's sight. He even brightened up a sad patch of ground by planting flowers in the spring. Throughout the summer, the students could see the tall sunflowers and the beautiful colors of the flowers that bloomed from Mr. England's generosity. He may not know every child by name, but he certainly makes sure they know if they need his help, he is there for them. The students trust and care about him as well. Recently a parent came into school and asked for his name because she wanted to thank him personally. He is more than a crossing guard to our students and their families, he is also a trusted friend.
