Mrs. Flynn

Mrs. Flynn has been a crossing guard at Irving School in Derby for the past year. She ALWAYS has a smile on her face and always puts the students first. She is always early to her post and always stays a few minutes extra, just to make sure everyone is safe. Mrs. Flynn doesn’t just stop the traffic while at her post-she regularly reminds the students about safe crossing procedures. She wears her brightly colored vest and carries her stop sign with pride, knowing that she is helping the students of the Derby community get safely to and from school each day.

Mrs. Flynn knows all the children’s names and will ask them about their day as they cross the road because she truly cares about each and every one of them. She willingly shares parts of her day with them as well. The children look forward to hearing stories from her, as there is always something new and exciting to be learned. She enjoys engaging the children in concepts about nature and about history. Mrs. Flynn enjoys taking walks by the river, the beach and various hiking trails and taking in the beautiful scenery while simply enjoying the gift of nature that surrounds her. She enjoys teaching the children about various birds and other creatures she has seen on her walks. Mrs. Flynn has been known to bring shells, interesting rocks, pine cones and various types of leaves and branches for the students to examine from her weekend walks.

Mrs. Flynn is also a reading tutor at Irving School. After devoting her time to the students as a tutor at the school, she saw that she could make more of a difference in her community by applying for the crossing guard job. Her kind and gentle manner has allowed Mrs. Flynn to excel in both positions. No matter what kind of day she is having, each student is greeted with a warm smile and knows that Mrs. Flynn is happy to see them.
