  • Under 2 years, unless reached the weight or height limit set by manufacturer, in a rear-facing system
  • 2 - 4 years, unless reached the weight or height limit set by manufacturer, in forward-facing restraint
  • 5-7 years, unless reached height of 4 feet 9 inches, in a belt-positioning child booster

  • Under 1 year or under 20 pounds in infant only seats and convertible seats used in the rear facing position
  • 1-4 years or more than 20 pounds in a child restraint system in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions
  • 5-8 years and under 57 inches or 65 pounds in a child restraint system of booster seat

When is a child restraint required?

  • Under 2 years old in rear-facing or until manufacturer's minimum weight or height requirement reached
  • at least 2 years and exceeding the rear-facing limits must ride in a forward-facing child restraint
  • 4-8 years and exceeding the forward-facing limits must be restrained in a booster
