Learn how Safe Kids programs address the leading causes of childhood injury and death.
It’s National Teen Driver Safety Week, and it’s still hard to believe that it has anything to do with me.
I still remember putting my babies in their first car seats. The long drive home from the hospital in the backseat scared that someone was going to hit us. Since my career is all about keeping kids safe in and around cars, it was a big part of my kids’ life, too, which was not always easy.
This May is the second year that Safe Kids Worldwide is observing Child Passenger Safety Technician Month by encouraging CPST instructors to reach out to healthcare professionals in their communities about the opportunity to become CPSTs.
Thanks to Safe Kids Worldwide and State Farm, I have the opportunity to travel across the country assisting technical updates for CPSTs. I see firsthand how partnerships with healthcare professionals really do make a difference.
Losing a colleague, a friend, is tough. Emilie Crown was such an advocate, such a dedicated Child Passenger Safety instructor, such a passionate person. She ran her local Safe Kids Coalition Buckle Up program in Montgomery County, Md. with events several times a week. Her passing is a huge loss for her family, Safe Kids, the CPS community and all the technicians and parents who were the beneficiaries of her relentless and passionate efforts. She was our “go to” leader for everything from reviewing programs to organizing events to media outreach.
My two boys love quarters. We don’t give them an allowance yet, but for the past few years we have used quarters as an incentive for doing things around the house like feeding the dog, picking up toys and emptying the dishwasher. My wife, Lauren, even pays them a quarter if they fart on me. Needless to say, Stephen, 6, and Thomas, 4, love these quarters, they save these quarters and they only spend them on the ultimate prize - Legos.
