MEET THE GOMEZ FAMILY
Meet the Gomez family. Ten-year-old Luis Gomez uses a wheelchair. Mom and dad work closely with him to make sure that their home is safe for him to move around.
Thursday was Safe Kids Day on Capitol Hill. We held a bipartisan event on September 20 to educate Senators, Members of Congress and their staff about the risks that kids face and the challenges parents have in preventing unintentional injury, the #1 killer of kids in America. The event was sponsored by Congressman Tom Petri (R-WI) and Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL).
Last week, the morning NPR show opened by wishing Cam Newton a happy 27th birthday. My son, Winston, nearly 6, asked the question I was pondering: "Who is Cam Newton?"
"I think he is a football player," I said (vaguely recalling his association with the NFL).
"So why does his birthday get recognized on the radio?" Winston asked.
It was a fair question. Superstar athletes are certainly well known and many do great things for their communities off the field.

September is Baby Safety Month, which just so happens to coincide with our anxious wait for the arrival of our first child…how fitting! Leading up to September has been a fun and strange combination of gearing up while also paring down. We got the cute outfits, figured out how to execute the perfect “swaddle” and made room in order to create a cozy nursery. But just as important, we focused our energies on making our home safe for our little man.
