December 2013 Product Safety Recalls

Safe Kids is committed to keeping you informed about recalls of kids’ oriented products. While it is important to keep aware of all recalls, Safe Kids urges you to pay particular attention to ones in red, as they are associated with one or more deaths. Please note: Safe Kids is now emphasizing especially important recalls at the beginning of the listings (in italics).

1/3/2014 NHTSA: Combi is recalling certain model child restraints manufactured because the harness webbing fails to meet minimum breaking strength requirements and a child may not be remain adequately secured in the event of a crash. 

1/3/2013 CPSC: Walmart is voluntarily recalling five-piece card table and chair sets because the chairs can collapse unexpectedly, posing a fall hazard and a risk of finger injury. Units: About 73,400. Injury reports include one finger amputation, three fingertip amputations, sprained or fractured fingers and one report of a sore back.

12/23/2013 CPSC: Landscape Structures is voluntarily recalling Oodle Swings because the swing seat is suspended too close to the ground, posing an injury hazard to children who can get their legs caught underneath the swing seat. Units: About 177. Nine children have broken their legs or suffered sprains when their legs got caught under the swing. 

12/19/2013 CPSC (with Health Canada): Playtex is voluntarily recalling its Hip Hammock infant carrier in which the buckles and straps can break and crack.  Units: 341,000 in U.S. and Canada. There have been two reports of injuries, where one infant required emergency room treatment.

12/11/2013 CPSC (with Health Canada): IKEA is voluntarily recalling wall-mounted lamps in the “SMILA” series. A 16-month-old child in a crib died after getting entangled in the lamp’s cord.Units: 4 million in U.S. and Canada.

12/12/2013 CPSC: Doodlebutt is voluntarily recalling Jelly BeadZ Jumbo BeadZ and Magic Growing Fruity Fun Water-absorbing polymer toys because they can be mistaken for candy and when swallowed can expand inside a child’s body and cause intestinal obstructions. Units: About 1,500

12/31/2013 FDA: Campbell is voluntarily recalling Prego Traditional Italian sauce because of a risk of spoilage. Units: About 300 cases

12/31/2013 FDA: The Cultured Kitchen is voluntarily recalling all flavors of their non-dairy cashew cheese product due to a risk of contamination from Salmonella.

12/30/2013 CPSC: Cabrinha Kiteboarding is voluntarily recalling H2 kiteboarding binding because the binding can detach from its base while riding and lead to loss of control. Units: 57

12/30/2013 CPSC: Joovy is voluntarily recalling Zoom Car Seat Stroller Adapters because the adapter clips can loosen on the stroller frame, posing a fall hazard. Units: About 1,500

12/28/2013 FDA: Giant Eagle is voluntarily recalling Candy Place Chocolate Santas packages due to an undeclared peanut allergen.

12/20/2013 FDA: Zip International is voluntarily recalling herring fillets in oil due to Listeria contamination which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children.

12/20/2013 FDA: Spokane Produce, Inc., is voluntarily recalling Victor’s Sesame Hummus due to concerns about possible Listeria Monocytogenes, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children.

12/20/2013 CPSC: Yankee Candle is voluntarily recalling pine berry candle rings because the candle rings’ synthetic foliage and berries are flammable, posing a fire hazard. Units: About 15,000

12/28/2013 FDA: Concertos in Chocolate is voluntarily recalling milk chocolate Santas because of a possible mislabeling where they may contain undeclared milk products.

12/19/2013 CPSC: Browning is voluntarily recalling Camouflage Hooded Junior Sweatshirts because they have drawstrings around the neck area that pose a strangulation or an entanglement hazard to young children. Units: About 4,300

12/18/2013 CPSC: Fox Factory is voluntarily recalling Evolution Mountain Bike Suspension Forks because the part of the suspension fork can separate and cause the front wheel to detach, posing a fall hazard. Units: About 11,250

12/16/2013 FDA: Bee International, Inc. is voluntarily recalling its packages of candy "Sweet Spots" because they may contain undeclared egg protein.

12/16/2013 CPSC: Mirage Fashions is voluntarily recalling Yoki Girls Faux Leather Jackets because the jackets have a drawstring through the hood which can pose a strangulation hazard to children. Units: 758

12/16/2013 CPSC: Seasonal Specialties is voluntarily recalling pre-lit artificial Christmas trees because the electrical components of the tree’s light strings can overheat and melt, posing fire, burn, and shock hazards to consumers. Units: About 1,800

12/13/2013 FDA: Blooming Import Inc. is voluntarily recalling Farmer Brand Dried Lily Flowers because they contain undeclared sulfites.

12/12/2013 FDA: Pin Hsiao & Associates, LLC is voluntarily recalling Gluten Free Blueberry Mini Muffins, because they may contain undeclared walnuts.

12/12/2013 FDA: Bee International, Inc. is voluntarily recalling 2oz. packages of candy "Sweet Spots" because they may contain undeclared egg protein.

12/12/2013 CPSC: Trek is voluntarily Madone bicycles because the bicycle’s front brake can fail, posing a crash hazard. Units: 6,800

12/11/2013 FDA: Whole Foods Market Mid-Atlantic Region is voluntarily recalling an organic creamy spinach dip because it contains eggs, an undeclared allergen.

12/11/2013 FDA: Blooming Import Inc. is voluntarily recalling Golden Lion Brand Dried Dates because they contain undeclared sulfites.

12/11/2013 CPSC: Solowave is voluntarily recalling home playground tube slides with port holes because the plastic port hole-type windows in the tube slide can break, posing a laceration hazard to children. Units: About 10,800

12/5/2013 CPSC: Academy Sports + Outdoors is voluntarily recalling Girls BCG Hooded Windsuits because they have drawstrings in the hood around the neck area that pose a strangulation hazard to young children. Units: About 6,600

12/4/2013 CPSC: David’s Place is voluntarily recalling Wearever Girl’s hooded jacket/pant set because the jackets sold with the set have drawstrings through the hood which pose a strangulation hazard to young children. Units: About 60 

12/4/2013 CPSC: Manhattan Group is voluntarily recalling Quixel baby rattle’s because the colored arches can break, creating a small part which poses a choking hazard to small children. Units: About 8,300

12/4/2013 CPSC: SRAM is voluntarily recalling bicycle chain derailleurs because a pin can loosen or dislodge causing the derailleur to jam or interfere with the wheel, posing a fall hazard. Units: 1,700

12/4/2013 CPSC: K2 Sports is voluntarily recalling K2 Revo Kick kickboards/scooters because the handle can detach or partially detach, posing a fall hazard to the rider. Units: About 400

12/3/2013 CPSC: L&F International Trade is voluntarily recalling mattresses because they fail to meet the mandatory federal open flame standard for mattresses, posing a fire hazard. Units: about 1,000

12/3/2013 CPSC: Crown Boiler is voluntarily recalling home heating boilers because the air pressure switch can fail allowing the boiler to emit excessive amounts of carbon monoxide. Units: About 2,200

12/2/2013 FDA: Huxtable’s Kitchen Inc. is voluntarily recalling Trader Joe’s Butternut Squash & Creamed Spinach Gratin, because it may not list wheat and egg in the ingredients.
