My name is Reggie McKinnon. I live in Cape Coral, Florida. Three years ago, on March 8, 2010, my wife Julia and I experienced the most devastating event that can happen to a parent: the loss of our baby girl, Payton Lyn. It was a day that changed our family forever.

On Saturday, April 5 more than 450 families and kids of all ages swept through the Lot in West Hollywood for the first ever Safe Kids Day in Los Angeles to help celebrate kids, prevent injuries and save lives.
The fun-filled event featured tons of celebrity guests, including Drew Barrymore and Ciara, who delighted kids by reading a few children’s books as part of story time; Vanna White, who invited kids to spin the wheel at a bike safety carnival booth; and Tina Charles and Matthew Hatchette, who played basketball with kids and offered tips at the sports safety center.
One of the best parts of my job at Safe Kids is working with families who generously share their stories to inspire other parents to get involved. The following story is one of my favorites because it really shows what our work is all about – the little things you can do that can make a big difference.
Every day, I continue to be grateful that we are all alive and were able to walk away from a crash that could have been tragic.
On August 19, I was on my way to a party with my two sons, Imraan and Amir.
Whether it’s in motorboats, sailboats, kayaks or canoes, there’s a good chance most of us will be hanging out in some kind of boat this spring or summer. After all, it’s one of the best ways for family and friends to spend time together and experience the freedom that comes from cruising on lakes, rivers and oceans.
